2015 Jeep Wrangler Review: 4 Wheel Drive SUV With Some Minor Oil Problems & Low Safety Scores

Alex Showalter
Oct 26, 2022

The 2015 Jeep Wrangler lasts around 250,000 miles with some oil leaks and transmission issues. At $18,325 to $26,050, it’s expensive, but worth it for the most capable SUV on the trails.

VehicleHistory Image
likeFilled The Good
Off-road capabilities are outstanding, the driving experience is fun and the V6 engine offers good power for the Wrangler’s size.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The suspension is bouncy on the roads, braking distances are longer than average and the driving position is awkward with the vertical windshield.

Is the 2015 Jeep Wrangler a Good Used SUV?

  • Overall Rating 7/10 – 2015 is a good year for the Wrangler, although it’s not as good of a daily driver as some other midsize SUVs in the same price range, giving it only an average overall rating. Owner reviews praise the capabilities in rough terrain, the strong V6 engine, as well as the stereo system.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 6/10 – Interior materials are more durable than luxurious, the seats are not very supportive, cargo space is also lower than other SUV.
  • Reliability 7/10 – There are no serious widespread problems on the 2015 Wrangler, although it’s less reliable than other midsize SUVs. Models from 20132021 all offer similar levels of reliability.
  • Performance 7/10 – Performance is good from the standard V6 engine, especially for the lighter 2-door model.
  • Safety 3/10 – The Wrangler earns a very low 3-star overall rating in government crash tests. The frontal crash tests are worse than average, while the rollover risk is high with the raised suspension. It also doesn’t feature any advanced safety technology found on other SUVs from 2015.
  • Gas Mileage 5/10 – Fuel economy is bad at only 18 MPG giving 405 miles of range from the 22.5 gallon tank. Gas costs are $53 higher than average, at $312 per month.
  • Value 8/10 – The Wrangler holds its value better than nearly any other SUV making it a great choice for buyers looking to avoid depreciation.

The gas tank is much smaller than you would expect, and you only get about 18-19 miles to the gallon.
It is a vehicle I have always wanted and was totally worth the wait! It's so much fun and also gives me more confidence on the road. The only downfall is the fuel efficiency.

Jeep wrangler a great vehicle.
My Jeep is a great off-road vehicle that will hold its value. Very reliable and I love the color. It is quality will continue to blow my mind.

Super fun ride I recommend it 100%.
We bought it already lifted with big tires and the ride is super fun. Drives over things really easily and being able to remove the doors and roof is awesome. It is 4 door and is a tight squeeze if you are trying to put someone in each seat. Definitely recommend for someone who wants a fun ride!

Why I love my jeep wrangler.
I love my jeep. Living in North Carolina, it is almost always easy to ride with the top down in the sun. However, having the 4x4 & a manual 6 speed transmission let me get through or over anything. The vehicle maintains its value over time, unlike most others, and there is a connection to others in the wrangler family with the jeep wave.
accountCircle Kiara L
Perfect for snow and warm weather considering you can take off the roof.
The only problem with my vehicle is that it uses a lot of gas for short distances but for long distances the gas is perfect. It is perfect for snow/ rain and warm weather concerning you can take off the roof and doors so fully appreciate the car. It is a great car to purchase. It is a bumpy ride though.

Dream rugged cruising SUV.
I love my Jeep. When they say Jeeps are rugged they really are! I live in Texas so the weather is a little crazy, but my Jeep makes me feel safe. It's not the most comfortable car but I am 28 with no kids so comfort is not my main priority. So far I have had no issues with my vehicle and I have had it for almost 4 years. If you are looking for a nice vehicle to go on trips and cruise in it's a great SUV! Like any other SUV its okay on gas so if you work far I wouldn't suggest it.

Gets around in all types of weather
I enjoy the four wheel drive. Gets around in all types of weather. Easy to find accessories/aftermarket parts. Does ride a little rough on the highway. Not made for comfort. Tops and doors are removable but they are hard to remove by myself. Jeeps hold their value. Owned a jeep grand Cherokee before the wrangler

Jeep wrangler 4 door - sporty and functional the best of both worlds.
I have truly enjoyed my jeep. It is fun to drive, I like the size of it, and I love that I can take the top off of it when the weather is nice. The front part of the top is easy for one person to remove and fits in the back which is very convenient. It is sporty yet functional which fits my lifestyle.

Jeeps: looks good but does not feel good.
Car does not ride smooth at all. The car shakes while on the highway and with winds cutting hard it makes a rough and bumpy drive. I would not suggest anyone getting this car to drive everyday. My windows are manual, and rolling them up or down is always a hassle.

I find it interesting that my vehicle is a non stop money dump
It's full of problems it's been an issue since I got it. I have put more money into it in the past 6 months than I did what I paid for and the thing still isn't fixed. So I spend most of my money on my vehicle and all of the repairs that it needs giving me no money to spend on other things.

It climb and handles well in the snow; but not rainy highway use.
This vehicle slips out of 4th gear and the dealership says it is geared correctly. Mechanical it runs and starts fine. It is not a smooth ride and even going to the grocery store is a pain. This is a one person vehicle although it has seating for 5. It lack of space is very annoying .

Jeep wrangler Sahara is not meant for long distance rides.
The 2015 jeep Sahara looks nice and has some cool features like the ability to remove the doors and roof, but it is uncomfortable and not a good car for long trips/drives. The interior is stiff plastic and the whole car shakes when going over 50mph so it is a rough ride on highways and freeways.
accountCircle Stephanie L
Jeep great for cruising especially during nice weather.
Problems: just a little bumpy. Performance: great for snowy mountains, rainy weather or just for cruising. Reliability: pretty good and reliable. Comfort: a little bumpy. Features: automatic windows, easy dissemble sunroof, interchangeable sunroof, low gas.

Jeep wrangler 2015 worth it?
Jeep wranglers do have great resale value; however, gas mileage is awful. The drive is nice until you go over speed bumps or curbs, the jeep will move as if you are riding a rollercoaster. The sound system is amazing. As you drive, you can hear the wind rubbing against the car which can be annoying.
accountCircle Amanda M
It is really good to go mudding in. Or going up big hills.
I have had it for years. It gave me a lot of trouble. But it was all easy fixes. Jeep are a little roomy inside. I would say myself that they are very comfortable. The bars on the side hurt my head when we do sharp turns. The middle console is really small. And I feel like it can flip very easily.

Like I mentioned in the other vehicle is I tend to go through a couple windshields a year because of it cracking!
Jeep windshield is built straight up and down so I tend to go through more windshields because they crack easily. I love how big and spacious the vehicle is!

What Do Critics Say About the Jeep Wrangler?

  • Consumer Reports says the updated Wrangler is an excellent choice for on and off road driving with good owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds gives the Wrangler a 4.2/5 praising the powerful engine, but doesn’t like the relatively weak brakes.
  • Kelley Blue Book users rate the Wrangler at 4.5/5, enjoying the amazing off-road performance, however, owners don’t like the noisy interior.

What Common Problems Does the 2015 Jeep Wrangler Have?

Common problems found on the 2015 Jeep Wrangler include oil leaks, grinding noises from the transmission, as well as some computer problems. Overall, these problems are more severe than other midsize SUVs, although they’re similar to other off-road focused choices. Repair costs are also slightly higher than average.

Oil leaks are a common issue reported by owners at around 75,000 miles. The oil filter housing cracks as it gets older, which leads to a steady oil leak. Replacing the filter housing is relatively inexpensive, only costing around $250, depending on local labor rates.

Grinding noises from the transmission also show up on some Wrangler models at around 50,000 miles. The problem is more common in models equipped with a manual transmission since it’s usually caused by a clutch issue. Replacing the clutch costs around $1,000.

Computer problems with the totally integrated power module (TIPM) have also been mentioned by some owners. TIPM failures are not as widespread as they were in earlier years, yet they are still something buyers should be aware of. Replacing the TIPM costs roughly $1,500 if it does wind up failing.

There are 3 relatively minor recalls on the 2015 Wrangler, which is better than other midsize SUVs. The recalls include the air bags and seat belts. Jeep will replace the parts in affected models for free.

How Long Will the 2015 Jeep Wrangler Last?

A well-maintained 2015 Jeep Wrangler should last around 250,000 miles, which is shorter than the extremely long-lasting Toyota 4Runner. Regular annual maintenance costs are more expensive than average, according to data from Repair Pal, at $645 per year.

Since many 2015 Wrangler models will have over 100,000 miles buyers should be prepared to replace the A/C compressor for $800, throttle body costing $525, as well as the liftgate struts which cost around $150.

Yes, I have not had any problems at all and I have drove with it for long distances. There has not been any problems!

accountCircle Kiya L

No I do not have any problems with my vehicle it is the perfect car for me I have no complaints at all.

accountCircle Anthony B

I have had to replace the motor due to a flood and have had some issues with it but they all have been covered by jeep.

accountCircle Melissa B

As of now my 2015 jeep wrangler Sahara does not have any mechanical problems. It gets the proper oil changes when do. It had a airbag recall but was fixed quickly.

accountCircle Nicole W

Windshield cracks very easily, hard to drive during high winds, not fuel efficient, road noise can be heard in cabin.

accountCircle Nicole O

The vehicle is mostly reliable. We have unfortunately had a couple of major mechanical issues, but fixing them was cheaper than buying a new one.

accountCircle Brandie W

Mine is a daily driver and very reliable. I haven't had any problems with mine at all. We have a lot of snow/ice in the winters here and it does a great job maneuvering.

accountCircle Romey O

My jeep specifically is a great car, I do not have many issues with her and most jeeps are pretty reliable when you get them.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is basic throughout the Wrangler with optional Bluetooth and a 6.5-inch touchscreen navigation system. Safety technology is non-existent since the 2015 Wrangler doesn’t even offer a rearview camera.

Is the 2015 Jeep Wrangler a Good Value?

Yes, the 2015 Jeep Wrangler is a good value since it’s a reasonably reliable off-road focused SUV. Blue book prices range from $18,375 to $26,125, making it more expensive than a Honda Pilot or Ford Edge. When new, the price range was $22,995 to $40,495. Depreciation is better than average, only losing about 5% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the Jeep Wrangler?

There are three main models of the Jeep Wrangler offered in 2015, from the base Sport all the way up to the capable Rubicon. All three are available as either a 2-door standard Wrangler or the 4-door Unlimited model.

  • 16-Inch Steel Wheels

What Engines Come In the Jeep Wrangler?

The engine found in the 2015 Jeep Wrangler is a strong 3.6L V6 which makes 285 horsepower, which gets up to 18 MPG. Performance is good, taking only 6.9 seconds to go from 0-60 MPH. The towing capacity is low, at up to 3,500 pounds.

What Colors Does the Jeep Wrangler Come In?

How Comfortable Is the Jeep Wrangler?

The 2015 Jeep Wrangler is not a very comfortable midsize SUV since it has basic materials which are designed more for longevity rather than comfort. Seats throughout the cabin are very basic and not supportive.

Passenger room is worse than average in both the 2 and 4-door models with limited legroom in the back seats.

How Much Storage Space Does the Jeep Wrangler Have?

Cargo space is lower than other midsize SUVs with enough room for 2-3 suitcases in the back of the 2-door model. There’s more room in the 4-door model with enough space for 5-6 suitcases behind the seats, and around 8-10 with the seats folded flat.

VehicleHistory Image

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The third generation of the Jeep Wrangler known as the JK, was introduced in 2007. It was replaced by the fourth generation, the JL, in 2018.

2013: Upgraded front seats, new tire pressure monitoring system, and optional Alpine stereo.

2014: No major changes.

2015: Upgraded standard stereo system, tool kit for doors added.

2016: Additional special edition models added along with new exterior colors.

2017: Optional LED headlights, available remote start & heated seats as well.

2018: Fully redesigned for the fourth generation, new styling, upgraded engines.

2019: Adaptive cruise control & forward collision warning systems available.

How Does the Jeep Wrangler Compare to the Competition?

The Jeep Wrangler is a worse daily driver than a lot of other midsize SUVs from 2015, although if you’re looking for a fun off-road driving experience then there’s nothing that compares.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is another midsize SUV from Jeep which costs around $1,500 less. Passenger room and technology are both better in the Jeep Grand Cherokee, while the Jeep Wrangler performs better off road. We recommend the Jeep Grand Cherokee for most shoppers unless you know you’ll be hitting the trails.

The Toyota 4Runner is another midsize SUV which costs around $5,000 more. Reliability ratings are significantly better in the Toyota 4Runner, while the higher ground clearance in the Jeep Wrangler makes it better for extreme terrain. We recommend the Toyota 4Runner since it will outlast the Wrangler while being nearly as good off-road.

Off road and street safe truck.
My jeep has an amazing turning ratio. Extremely durable, great handling off road, easy to go from street road to off road. Fun to drive, good visibility. Nice to have a real tire on the back of the jeep, not worries if a flat should occur. Looking forward to getting a new jeep in the future.

I enjoy this fun vehicle. It is easy to drive and fun. I sometimes miss the comfort of my previous vehicle. My wrangler is comfortable as the driver but so much as the passenger. Cargo area is spacious and it has excellent towing ability. The hard top is hard to remove without help.

The jeep that can turn into a convertible anywhere.
The jeep wrangler is definitely made for those looking for a smooth and easy ride but more so looking for a fun adventure. The four door addition makes it easy for 5 people to get in and out of the vehicle. Can easily adjust the height to make the vehicle feel taller, but this does make it more difficult to both enter and exit. It definitely is not the smoothest ride, but great for off-roading and a generally fun vehicle to drive! It does not have a backup camera, which is how I was taught how to back-up so not a huge issue to me, even after having vehicles that have had back-up cameras. There are many different options to make it more rugged or more luxurious depending on preferences. Love being able to drive around with the top off on nice days! I am able to take the top off and put it back on all by myself, fairly easily.

My jeep is lifted and it makes a loud crunch noise when turning too tightly. I love being able to open it up and modify it. I added seat covers to make it more comfortable. The soft top will not do well in the winter, though and my pets hate how loud it is while driving around.

It's a jeep. It is the best vehicle that you can get. I will not buy another type of vehicle ever. You can drive the jeep in the snow or mud with no worry at all. My jeep will take me anywhere that I want to go. All jeeps are customizable and you can lift them. You cannot live a Prius or hybrid.

Jeeps are the best: they make driving feel exciting and adventurous.
The wrangler sport makes every day driving feel like you are on an adventure. It makes traveling so much more enjoyable. It is comfortable, easy to drive (and park), gets decent gas mileage. I have driven the car to and from Florida/NYC three times now and it is still running great. My favorite feature is the soft top convertible and the ability to open/close it quickly.

My 6-cylinder wrangler is comfortable with enough power to handle any highway situation, and the versatility to manage any kind of road that I'd want to travel. I especially love the sound system. The only thing I'd change is fuel economy; I wish there was a high-efficiency diesel model or hybrid.

This car is a lot of fun to on. Whether it is off routing, driving with the top down, the doors down, or both, possibly having the confidence to take your car wherever you want. All of these aspects lead to an amazing car. The only downside is that it is not always the most comfortable car to drive. It is not necessarily luxurious, but it is this car is a lot of fun to own. 2015 jeep wrangler unlimited sport 4d.
I have been driving a jeep wrangler since 2015 and have been happy with my decision. I have found the vehicle to be reliable, with the only issues stemming from user error. The jeep wave is a real thing, and I find it a fun little perk being apart of a waving wrangler community. I do not drive often enough for gas mileage to be a huge concern. I would estimate 13-15 mpg local, 17-20 highway (20 being very high end). My only regret is getting a hard top, as storage can be a burden when I want to drive topless (the vehicle, not me). Worth the money, and happy with my purchase. Five points, Gryffindor!

Problems - sometimes, when it rains, there are issues with the brakes. Unable to stop right away. Loud when driving on the freeway. Difficult for some people to get in and out of the back. Not a lot of space in the back for groceries when the back seat is down. Performance - drives great in general. Reliability - is very reliable. Comfort - very comfortable front and back seats. My dream vehicle! I love modifying my jeep to make it my own!
I absolutely love my jeep wrangler, the only issue I have had is that my abs light frequently pops up randomly. I have modified my jeep (4 inch lift, 35’ mud tires, ect) so that right there effects the ride of my jeep. Before having done that my vehicle road very smooth, I have a soft top so it does make the ride a little louder and colder in the winter but all manageable. The soft top is so easy to take on it off! I do not have a ton of bells and whistles in my jeep but other models offer more packages, it wasn’t a necessity for me personally. I love how you can make your jeep your own, there are so many different things you can do to make it stand out. The jeep community is so fun to be apart of, I love going to conventions and of course the jeep wave is a plus!

The 2015 jeep wrangler sport has exceeded my expectations. The only complaint I have which I will say first is that the back seat is a little small for teenagers. 2015 Jeep Wrangler Sahara
The Jeep Wrangler is a good car. I have owned a Jeep in the past, that has lasted over the years with just the normal wear and tear. I have not had performance problems, but when it rains the water seeps through the grooves of the window panel ( where the window meets the detachable roof). This jeep is reliable and its features are suitable for everyday travel or hiking/camping off road. I like my Jeep, and I would recommend it to a friend.

All around excellent car! Always will be a Jeep girl.
I have had Jeeps before, never a Wrangler though. They have always been reliable and they work for years. However, lately the gas cap sign came on and stayed lit for about a week as well as the check engine light. Once the gas cap light turned off, the check engine light still stayed on for a few more days. It eventually went away as well. Other than that the Jeep has been working perfectly for the 1. 5 years I have owned it. Plus, I always gets compliments on it from friends, family, and even strangers. I customized it and removed the original stereo it same with and added a touch screen radio that allows apple play. Much more modern that way.

Fun, sporty, and reliable.
The jeep wrangler unlimited is not the best car ever. It is sporty, fun, and reliable. It also allows you to feel safe. The unlimited has a lot of room in the back of the jeep as well. This is similar to an SUV. If you want a 4x4, this is also the car for you.

Jeep wrangler. Leather seats can get very hot. Back seat is not comfortable.
Radio is terrible that was put into it. Does not drive well in long car rides can be very bumpy. Very fun to drive short rides and have option to take car top off. Has food mileage and gas. Safe car but can tip easily. Has a lot of accessories to purchase online.

The top is removable and the inside is Esther proof.
I love my vehicle I like the fact that it is good on and off road. I like that the top can come off and on. It is overall a great car. The inside of the car is waterproof which is a great feature. The legroom is a little uncomfortable depending on your height I have leather seats which come with the seat warmers.

Jeep wrangler Sahara: an overview.
Sometimes, the hard top has creaks near the a pillar. It can be annoying when driving. Apart from that, the car has been very reliable, and it is a lot of fun. I have a suspension lift and 35 inch tires, and it is a beast in the snow and fun with the roof off in the summer.

I love the hardtop - it's a great barrier to the wind noise.
We haven't had any problems with it! We've enjoyed it. We use it as a family for road trips and errands - everyone is comfortable. It is easy to take the T-tops off. It does not take too long to take the whole top off. The touchscreen radio and steering wheel controls are a nice addition.

My vehicle is amazing because of the village and the color.
The car is amazing but it is not for sale because I love the car and would not sell it. Thanks. The car has great mileage and this helps a lot because I can't keep putting gas into the car. What I love about the car is that is blue and it is a two seater with is fun so I can only have one passenger. The seats are super comfy. The gas mileage can go on forever because it is a small car but yet it is amazing for going down to the beach or even going to a small road trip.

We love our jeep wrangler!!
The roof leaks when it rains and it is very expensive to fix the seals. The car is a little loud when driving on the freeway because of the roof. The car runs great and fits the entire family. We are able to transport what we need. The service we get for the car is great!

Nice build and great for off roading.
It is a good car. Did not have it long enough to form an opinion. It is second hand and does the job. Previously owned a wrangler and we love it. Nice car for two people. Spacious and comfortable. The features are up to date. The only difficult part is that it is a two door car, but it is hard to go into the back seat.

A fun car with great features and comfort for front seat passengers.
One thing I dislike about my particular jeep is it does not have a/c vents for the back seat. The back row is also very straight up, so it is not the most comfortable. Other than that, it is amazing! Reliable, compact for parking, and just a fun car. The 4wd has come in handy many times. I love the style of it, too!

Love my Jeep, perfect college student's dream to be traveling in one of these.
I love my jeep. Very durable and great for any kind of use. I hate how bad gas is with this vehicle but still love it overall. I do wish the jeep had a bigger screen in mine but that is something I'm already looking into fixing. The features are okay, but not as advanced as the new up to date cars.

Great car. Love my jeep wrangler. Super reliable and fun.
My jeep wrangler is a great vehicle! Very sporty and sleek it is a fun car for summer and a reliable one for winter. Lots of space both in the trunk and back seats it is easy to take on trips. It is reliable and as long as I’d had it has had little to no problems. Although sometimes a bumpy ride it still is comfortable. Does great in all types of weather and terrain. Would recommend anybody to purchase a jeep wrangler.

Fun Jeep, needs design help
Like the convertible part - but the hard top is very heavy and difficult to take off and put back on. The are constant issues with the suspension, and I only drive on streets - NO off roading!! I enjoy the upgraded technology of the jeep, but do wish that it wasn't so expensive to upkeep. I do wish that it got better gas mileage too.

It is a safe and reliable vehicle.
I like the look of my vehicle. I like the durability. However, sometimes it is noisy. I like the safety features.

Truly an all-terrain vehicle
The car works well in various types of weather conditions and in a variety of temperatures. In the past, vehicles I've owned have had a hard time adjusting to the variance, but that is not the case with this model. I like the sturdy feeling the vehicle provides while driving at high speeds, as well as the lax feeling taking the doors and top off the vehicles gives in the summertime.

It is reliable and comfortable, I'd buy another one.
It is my dream car, one of them. It is comfortable enough for a long trip but can perform off-road as well. It is big enough for people and groceries. I love the height and cannot wait to get it lifted.

It's a fun vehicle to own.
I like that it it's tall enough to give me a good view of the road. People with the same vehicle always wave as you pass by. It's also a lot of fun to drive.

The reliable kind of jeep.
My vehicle is reliable and was a must needed car in my opinion. There really are not any issues I have had to deal with it yet but it wasn't a cheap purchase. It is used and does take a lot of gas but is not that expensive. I think I will keep it around for a while. It gets frustrating to take on and off the hard and soft tops though.

Jeep wrangler honest review.
Jeep wrangler is not very comfortable but very reliable. Features are very nice looking and high end. Brakes wear down quickly. Interior of the car is very nice looking but backside is small. Unable to fit a car seat in backseat. Great on gas and gets good mileage.
