There are some hard plastic buttons on the dash, the suspension is firm and the steering feels loose.

This car is very comfortable and is great for long drives with your family.
The seat and wheel get moved a lot so it is a bit uncomfortable to sit in the driver's seat. Also the heating function broke soon after I got the car. I do not think there is much else that is bad about the car, it works well, it drives smoothly and it fits people very comfortably and it great for road trips, with it is cruise control feature.

My silver/white Volkswagen Jetta.
I love my Jetta. It is a 2018 and I have had it for one year with absolutely no problems. It always starts. It is very comfortable, 5 people can fit in it with no problem. It has a large trunk, great back up camera and the turbo makes it have a lot of get up and go.

The VW Jetta: A great vehicle
I absolutely, positively, without a shadow of any doubt whatsoever love my Jetta. It gets great gas mileage. The stereo system is amazing. The back up camera is very useful. It drives extremely smoothly and is fast. The sport mode is great for highway use. Especially when I need to switch lanes in a hurry.

Two small problems with an otherwise great car.
Our Jetta gets very good gas mileage, however, it needs pure gasoline to do this, and only top tier. Be prepared to spend more on gas (we average around $40 a tank), but also be prepared for it to last an average of 400 miles. We've also had some issues with alignment and are working to see if it is our local roads, or the Jetta itself. Just in case, be also prepared for a monthly alignment (around $100). Aside from these two things, the Jetta is an incredible car.

No interesting features about the car. It is just gray on gas!
It is a very basic car to be spending so much on. No features that make it attractive. The value of the car keeps dropping and it small. It is great on gas! But does not suit younger generations as this car has no addition accessories. It is a reliable care, comfort is average.

Not Impressed
I have the Jetta on a week long rental while my Hyundai is being repaired. It is a substandard vehicle. The digital mph display keeps disappearing. The seats are uncomfortable and it sounds like a tin can. This car is two levels below my Hyundai and three levels below my A5.

My problems with my Volkswagen Jetta.
My Volkswagen Jetta is not my favorite car I owned. My car sits out in the winter. When I leave for work in the morning, my car door will not close. It will be frozen. I have to wait for the car to warm up, I am late for work. I have had a lot of problems with my Jetta. The second day I had my new Jetta, the brakes went. It needed new brake pads on it. The oil light always malfunctions causing me to always have to make an appointment at the dealership to fix it. So, I am not that happy with Volkswagen.

Great car, and great quality vehicle.
Comfortable car, the only thing I do not like is how small because I need a larger car at this point in time. The car is great on gas and comfort as well as pick up, speed, and handling. I'd definitely recommend this car to another person that is looking for a car that is a good price and quality.

This car is compact, reliable, and doesn't eat up gas. It's also fast and affordable. Trunk size is average, however still able to fit my huge luggage and all my military gear. Although the color is not what I wanted, it's still a good car choice for everyday driving.

Gets around town in style!
This car does it's job well, I just don't think I was the audience intended to drive it. I prefer something a little quicker and possibly All wheel drive. However, if you just need a nice little car to get you around town and look nice while doing it, this one's for you.

What Do Critics Say About the VW Jetta?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2018 Volkswagen Jetta offers great build quality and a European driving experience, with high owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the Jetta at 4.2/5, enjoying the extremely spacious cabin, but doesn’t like the loose steering and handling.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Jetta a 4.4/5, praising the very high-quality interior for a small sedan, but owners don’t like the lack of all-wheel drive for the snow.

What Common Problems Does the 2018 Volkswagen Jetta Have?

Common problems found on the 2018 Volkswagen Jetta include excessive oil consumption, a worn-out throttle body, along with vibrations at highway speeds. Overall, these problems are similar to some other small cars on the market, leading to average repair costs as a Jetta ages.

Excessive oil consumption is the most widespread complaint from 2018 VW Jetta owners at around 10,000 miles. The problem is usually nothing to worry about, and just part of normal operation. If you notice white or blue smoke then that is a sign there could be an oil leak into the engine, which will need to be diagnosed by a shop.

A worn-out throttle body has also been reported by some 2018 Jetta owners at roughly 30,000 miles. This is not a widespread problem, but is one that is expensive to fix if it does break out of warranty. Replacements cost around $850, depending on local labor rates due to the high parts costs.

Vibrations at highway speeds are another problem found on some Jetta models in the first 10,000 miles. Usually, it’s just a simple alignment issue which can be fixed for around $100. There are some suspension problems mentioned by some owners, which also need to be realigned, costing around $250.

There are three recalls on the 2018 Volkswagen Jetta, which is similar to other small cars from the same year. The most serious recall is for loose fuel rail bolts, which can allow a fuel leak to form. VW will replace the bolts and rails as needed on affected models for free. Other recalls include the brake master cylinder, along with the key. Volkswagen will also fix both of those issues for free.

How Long Will the 2018 Volkswagen Jetta Last?

A well-maintained 2018 VW Jetta can last around 200,000 miles, which is shorter than some other compact cars like the Toyota Corolla. Regular annual maintenance costs are slightly more than the competition, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $549 per year.

As a used 2018 Jetta reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history, owners should be prepared to replace the fuel filter for $175, coolant temperature sensor costing $400, along with the timing belt tensioner which costs $700.

Yes reliable, I haven't had any issues with it. Special locking features, changing the oil is simple, no other known issues.

accountCircle Daisy C

Yes, I feel this car is totally reliable. The only problem that I found on this car is that it consume much gas that others, something that is totally understandable based on the model and technology that it has.

accountCircle Crystal B

Yes very reliable. I have only had one issue so far which was with the factory battery not lasting very long had to replace it shortly after purchase.

accountCircle Chase H

Very reliable, no problems other than outdated technology. The Volkswagen signature cloth seats could be of higher grade material. Seats wear out very easily.

accountCircle Babu S

It is a reliable car. I have come across no problems with the Jetta. This is the 4th one I've leased. I would continue leasing with them

accountCircle Kathleen W

I have not had ANY problems with this car. If I have had any questions, the local dealership has always helped me out.

accountCircle Miranda M

It's super reliable. I have not had any problems as the Germans make great cars, it works great and perfect

accountCircle Rachel B

I haven't had any problems with it at all. It’s been very reliable and I certainly hope it continues to be. The car is only a little over a year old. My Toyota was 10 years old and had very few problems so I'm hoping the Jetta will perform similarly.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is good for a small car, offering a standard 5-inch touchscreen. Optional upgrades include a larger 6.3-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with a more powerful stereo.

Standard safety technology is similar to other compact cars including a rearview camera.

Optional driver assistance features include:

  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Forward collision warning
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Rear cross traffic alert
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Front and rear parking sensors

The sixth generation of the VW Jetta was launched for the 2011 model year, and will be replaced by the seventh generation in 2019.

2015: Small exterior styling changes, interior materials are now higher quality, and the diesel engine is more efficient.

2016: New entry-level engine offered, diesel engine removed due to diesel-gate, and there’s a standard touchscreen stereo system.

2017: Rearview camera is now standard on all models, USB connectivity added to the stereo.

2018: Wolfsburg Edition model added to the lineup, and some new wheel choices available.

2019: Fully redesigned for the seventh generation with new styling, technology, and engine choices.

How Does the VW Jetta Compare to the Competition?

The 2018 Volkswagen Jetta is a nice small sedan, offering a great entry to point to a German car with great build quality and a reasonably upscale interior.

The Volkswagen Passat is a larger car offered by VW for about $3,000 more. Passenger room is better in the Volkswagen Passat, while the Volkswagen Jetta offers more responsive steering and acceleration, making it more fun to drive. We recommend the VW Jetta for most shoppers, unless you need the extra room found in the Passat.

The Honda Civic is another small car which can be found for about $1,500 more. Standard entertainment technology is better in the Honda Civic, while the VW Jetta has a much nicer interior for the money. We recommend the Honda Civic since the ownership costs are lower, but it’s worth testing both to see which you prefer.

Volkswagen Jetta, my best car yet!
I love my Jetta! It has been a great car overall. The tires it came with are great in the snow, it does well in all weather. It starts easy and runs well. It is a very well handled car and it is always reliable for me. It is a very comfortable car, I love all the features it came with. I love sport mode and the fact that I can have easier handling when I want it and can switch it back easily. I do not like the way it shifts while going downhill, and I also dislike the fabric seats because they easily stain. I have the base model and many of my friends and family note how nice it is.
For the small engine this car has it has quite a bit of power and definitely makes driving fun. The overall appearance is great and sleek, the body looks more expensive than the car is. The interior is quite nice and comfortable, I can comfortably fit 5 people in the car without any complaints. The sound system is incredible and great for jamming out. The gas mileage is pretty good for both city and highway and I never have any issues with my fuel system. Oil changes are normal, I never need them too often and there's never been issues with the oil usage. I enjoy this car a lot and for the price it is very reliable and quick. I recommend this car for anyone looking for an affordable sporty vehicle. The led daytime headlights give the car a very sporty high end look especially with tinted windows and they are very clear and vibrant. The paint (I have the dark gray) is very nice and has a sheen to it that makes it look very sleek and shiny, I really enjoy washing it often to increase the vibrancy.

Check out the dual clutch system may be put a new clutch plate or flywheel up then, get better solenoids for the transmission and better exhaust. The Jetta is an affordable, reliable car.
Sometimes the Bluetooth interface is buggy and the ac takes a while to work. Other than that I really like my Jetta. It wasn't too expensive and was a big upgrade to my previous car. The backup can and awesome sound system are really nice to have as well.
accountCircle Michael B on January 27, 2021
Wonderful handling, wonderfully powerful for the engine size, and comfortable.
The GLI, like all Jetta wheel base, handles superbly and the suspension is slightly stiffened for greater control versus a softer suspension for comfort. The fender sound system is excellent in fidelity but the smart features for the Android Auto interface are very buggy and often lose connection with your smartphone. Heated seats and keyless entry and keyless start are all great. Rear view camera and proximity sensors are excellent as well. My only complaint is performance: the engine is capable of at least 87 more horsepower without changing any parts, but changing that coding would void the warranty. Also there is significant lag between depressing the accelerator and the turbo actually functioning. Excellent car, could use a few performance tweaks that would be easily fixed if the warranty allowed.

Why my Jetta is so amazing, and you should get one.
This is my second Volkswagen Jetta that I have purchased/ leased and I absolutely love it. Not only does it provide excellent gas mileage, it is comfortable, reliable, and easy to handle. It is wonderful for tight parking spots and parallel parking. My newest model also includes a sunroof, and it was a great addition to an already adored vehicle. The touch to start is an added feature that I was pleasantly surprised to enjoy. It makes for quick startups and turn offs, while enjoying leaving my keys in my purse. I am able to get in and out quickly. The leather interior is fantastic for clean ups as I have a toddler and expecting our second. I adore this car!

Great mileage and comfortable.
It is super comfortable and would recommend I love the heated seats. It drives really well especially in the snow. It is super affordable and the gas mileage is super good. 450 miles for filling up your tank. I would buy this car again as it is a great car for traveling and the lease was super affordable.

No interesting features about the car. It is just gray on gas!
It is a very basic car to be spending so much on. No features that make it attractive. The value of the car keeps dropping and it small. It is great on gas! But does not suit younger generations as this car has no addition accessories. It is a reliable care, comfort is average.

High level VW Jetta overview.
It is a very reliable car in terms of maintenance, warranty. For the price value it looks more expensive then it is. The con is no ac control for back seat of car which has difficulty getting air to it. The trunk space is adequate for the car. Overall great car.

My VW Jetta is very comfortable and reliable. The backseat is perfect for driving my family around and the trunk is very spacious. I've had multiple Jetta's and I would purchase another in the future.
My VW Jetta is very reliable. I have no complaints.

Technology is amazing. Comfort is fantastic. Parts are inexpensive.
I love my vehicle. My vehicle is very comfortable, runs well, no problems out of it. I enjoy riding in it and so does my child. Music is excellent coming out of speakers. Technology pack is excellent that came with my car. I would recommend my car for anyone that needs reliable affordable car.

Comfortable and spacious with great features!
This car is very comfortable and has a good amount of room, the trunk is very large and can fit lots of luggage or suitcases. The touch screen and Bluetooth speakers were a great addition for me from my old car.

The Jetta has great get up and go!
No tinted windows, our mistake. Same with headlights - they do not shut off automatically. I think all models should come with those features. Also, starting the car quite often is difficult because there is an issue with the steering wheel, which has to be fought with while stepping on the brake.

First car, first love, first aid.
Incredibly reliable car, fuel-efficient, and comfortable. The design is very neat and contemporary. The entertainment system works with Bluetooth connectivity which is great for using your phone hands-free. The only downside is its electrics. They seem to work up in very special conditions. My next vehicle will most likely be a Volkswagen. 4/5 well deserved.

Runs smoothly and easy to drive.
Car runs very smoothly and the gas is really good. Feel safe in the car, in addition to it having safety features. Nice size and comfort. Like how it has carplay and connects to phone. Haven't had any problems with it that I can think of. I like the size and height of car, not too low to the ground.

A good car for everyday travel.
It is a good car all together. Good first time car. Maintenance can get pricey. That however is a given with German cars. It drives smooth and has decent gas mileage. Roomie seating area and roomie trunk. The back seats can come down which helps with transporting large items. It is very good looking car as well.

All new safety upgrades since my last VW purchase.
Safe and stylish. I like the new warranty program. Excellent customer service at the dealership I purchased my new vehicle.

Fun and sporty, high energy vehicle.
The Volkswagen Jetta gli is a great car. The all leather, heated seats are very comfortable. The gli is a high performance vehicle with quick get up. And go. Steering wheel paddle shifters keep your hands on the wheel. Handles well in rainy and snowy conditions. And the fender sound system is a fun bonus.

Fantastic car! Very few complaints.
I haven't had any issues with this vehicle. I love that it connects to my phone and has a touchscreen. The heated seats are a nice feature. The car is very speedy for the size and is very easy to move around. Every once in awhile my phone has issues connecting via USB cable to the onboard console.

Great volkswagen, worth the upgrade.
Love this car. The heated seats are great for the winter, as well as the non skid technology. And the sunroof is great in the summer. This is my second jetta, and it was well worth going up from the base model. I have not had any issues with this car.

The miles per gallon is insane. I can easily go 400 miles on one fill up.
Driving it is really comfortable. The mpg is amazing and I only have to fill up once every two weeks. I would recommend this car to anyone trying to find a safe commuting vehicle. The one negative is that the seats feel a little bit cheap but with this affordable of a car it can pass because of how much money you save in all aspects.

Awesome car for pleasure and functionality.
It is windy. It has a smooth ride. The driver's seat has lumbar support which makes it so comfortable. The sunroof is a nice feature on a cool, sunny day. It is a pleasure to drive this car. It is not bad on gas and very reliable. I haven't had any issues at all. Not many people have this car so it stands out which is nice in a parking lot. The ac cools the car quickly and it is nice that the passenger has the option to choose a different temperature than the one chosen by the driver.

It is a manual transmission.
It is a manual transmission that we love. The gas mileage is amazing. It works perfectly for a daily commuter vehicle.

It's great almost never you should encounter issues.
I like that it does not give me any trouble, I like the exterior of it and the interior, I do not like that sometimes gas to fill it up cn cost more.

People and coworkers are always complimenting me on my car.
I love my Jetta Volkswagen 2018 this is actually my second Jetta I have purchased I like that they're comfortable ride smooth and do not give me any mechanical problems. It gives me outstanding gas mileage on the road and on highway. It is not to small and not a huge car it is a perfect sedan. The seats are heated and leather which are a great upgrade it has led daylight running lights and fog lights. I have driven a Jetta Volkswagen for the last 6 to 7 years and I would definitely buy another one if I needed to.

The gas mileage is wonderful.
I have the Wolfsburg edition and it gets great gas mileage and handles well. I opted out of the fancy stuff but the engine speak for itself and has great acceleration.

Great small reliable and great car.
No problems at all, it is a great small car to get around town with very large truck and quite a bit of space for a small car. This is my 8th Volkswagen wagon and really never had a major problem with any of them, they are very reliable and smart for driving.

Overall my vehicle is reliable, cute, small, and affordable.
Overall I love my Jetta, but when my check engine light is on I know it is going to be expensive since it is a German car. But I got my car when it was new since I leased it and it has not given me much problems but an oil change. I recommend leasing new German/foreign cars so they will not give you mechanical issues. It is very comfortable and smooth to drive. The steering wheel is very easy to turn and makes the drive feel like you're gliding.
