The 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan lasts around 250,000 miles with some minor stereo system and A/C issues reported. At $19,200 to $32,990, it’s a good value for a compact SUV with a more upscale interior and an optional third row.

Volkswagen tiguan se with a great drive and beautiful sunroof!
I really love everything about the car. The car is very comfortable and the drive is amazing. I have driven a BMW before as well as an Audi but the tiguan's drive is much better and a very smooth drive. It is a very reliable car and have yet to have any real issues with it. My favorite part of the car is the beautiful big sunroof. It has a beautiful view of the sky. The biggest issue I have had is the fact that the backup camera does not beep which has caused to me to hit the back of something.

It is a comfortable, reliable family car.
Very reliable, we have had no problems with the car so far. Has a lot of room with optional 3rd row seating. It drives great, picks up speed fast. I do not love the automatic engine off mode, but you have the option to turn that off. Very comfortable. We love the sunroof and the different driving modes.

The amount of space and storage. The great journey of this car.
My tiguan is the most comfortable vehicle I have owned. The leather seats are always so smooth, and cool with the powerful ac. Leaving the car in the sun has been amazing for the heat heating up the leather and making my car smell brand new every time I open the door. The space in the tiguan se is amazing. I recently moved, and with the third row easily coming down it made moving easier, along with fitting my friends in the second row to help.

I like the feel of a car, having cargo space and third row seating for guests.
So far I am loving my tiguan. I have had it for almost a month now. It drives just like the Jetta I traded in. The only issue that I have is that when receiving a call, callers cannot communicate with me but I can hear them talking. Hopefully I can figure out the problem.

European Handling and Build Quality
I went with the SEL Tiguan instead of a Mazda CX-5 or the Honda CR-V. I preferred the seating which fit like a glove and no thigh pressures. The switchgear and feature set is leagues beyond the others. It has a wonderfully European like ride quality and great handling. The Infotainment system is the most advanced and best quality I've experienced to date. I have not found the engine underpowered considering our highway is a 80mph speed limit and I pass people all the time with no issues. The build quality is most typically German. Everything just fits and doesn't have any noises produced in their usage. The Digital Dash is unreal. Glad I went this route

Love my new car. Very comfortable on long car rides and low road noise. Very reliable not problems. Gas mileage about 27 mpg. In town and 32 mpg Hwy. We have third row seating and it is very comfortable for 7 adults. Auto start is a plus for those cold winter day.

  • Edmunds rates the Tiguan at 3.8/5, praising the passenger and cargo space, but doesn’t like the slow engine.

What Common Problems Does the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan Have?

Common problems found on the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan include Bluetooth issues, a weak A/C system, along with water leaking into the cabin. Overall, most of these problems are relatively minor compared to other compact SUVs on the market.

Bluetooth issues are the most widespread complaint from 2020 VW Tiguan owners in the first 1,000 miles. The Bluetooth system for the stereo simply loses connection randomly, leading to disconnects. There are software updates available which improve the reliability of the connection, which most dealerships will install for free, while some charge around $50.

A weak A/C system is another issue mentioned by Tiguan owners at around 10,000 miles. Usually when the A/C system is blowing weak, it’s a sign of a clogged line somewhere in the system. Diagnosing the source of the problem costs around $150, while fixing it can cost $50 to $300, depending on the source.

Water leaking into the cabin also shows up on some Tiguan models with a sunroof. The drain line for the sunroof gets clogged up with debris or comes loose, allowing water to leak into the cabin. Repairing the issue usually costs under $100, depending on local labor rates.

There are three recalls on the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan, which is similar to other small SUVs. The most serious recall is for the third row seat belt anchor bolt, which VW will fix by installing a new bolt. Other recalls cover the rear spoiler, along with the seat backs, which Volkswagen will also repair for free.

How Long Will the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan Last?

A well-maintained 2020 VW Tiguan can last around 250,000 miles, which is about 50,000 miles less than the long-lasting Toyota RAV4. Regular annual maintenance costs are higher than some other small SUVs, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $650 per year.

As a used 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history, owners should be prepared to replace the brake master cylinder for $400, transmission oil pan gasket costing $300, along with the axle shaft seal which costs $375.

  • Pedestrian detection

  • Forward automatic emergency braking
  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Rearview camera

Some optional driver assistance features include:

  • Rain-sensing windshield wipers
  • Lane departure warning
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Adaptive headlights
  • Lane keep assist

The second generation of the Volkswagen Tiguan came out for the 2018 model year.

2015: More standard features including a rearview camera, 5-inch touchscreen, along with an automatic transmission.

2017: SE and R-Line models are discontinued, Wolfsburg Edition and Sport models introduced, standard 6.3-inch touchscreen.

2018: Fully redesigned with a roomier interior, third row, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, also more efficient engines.

How Does the VW Tiguan Compare to the Competition?

The 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan is a very nice compact SUV offering good reliability with an entry-level German build quality giving it a more luxurious feel than a lot of the competition.

The Nissan Rogue is another compact SUV available for around $3,500 less. Standard safety technology is a bit better in the Nissan Rogue, while the VW Tiguan offers a more luxurious and spacious interior. We recommend the Volkswagen Tiguan since it is a more reliable choice long-term.

The Jeep Cherokee is a popular competitor available for around $1,000 less. Off-road performance is better with the Jeep Cherokee’s 4WD system, while the VW Tiguan has more room for passengers and cargo. We recommend the VW Tiguan, although both are nice, for the 2020 model year making it worth testing them out to see which you prefer.

VW: worth it; great & long lasting reliable cars.
For starters, I have always owned a VW for a multitude of reasons: sales and service is top notch, price of car is fair, and if taken care of properly they last a long time. I am new to my tiguan, but I really enjoy the smooth ride, all the amenities it came with, and the full length moon/sunroof. I am not a huge fan of the auto shut off feature, so that gets turned off a lot.

The tiguan is great. The only issue I’d the automatic engine stopper- so every time I turn on my car I have to press the button to make the engine stay on. It is supposed to be a gas and energy saver so many people like it, but it is not for me because the car will shut down if you are idle for more than a few minutes.

Two annoying aspects of VW tiguan.
There are two things I hate about my 2020 tiguan se. First, the trunk does not have a button in the driver's area. The trunk has to be manually opened, which is really dumb that there is no manual button or electronic button to do this. The second thing I hate is the glove compartment in the front passenger dash. The glove compartment door does not latch easily, especially if you have a folder (like the VW folder you get when you buy the car) in there.

I love this car! I feel so comfortable and safe while driving!
I bought this car in January of 2020, so have had it for under a year. So far, I haven't had any issues, other than a cracked windshield, which was caused by a flying rock on the highway. I love the 'auto-stop' feature, which alerts the driver when they are approaching a stopped vehicle too fast, or when drivers in front are hitting their brakes suddenly. The full touch screen and apple CarPlay are some of the main reasons I bought this car. Music while commuting is very important to me, and the interface is so user-friendly and easy. The speakers in the car are great as well. I get really good gas mileage, and is relatively cheap to fill the tank for an SUV. The trunk space is very nice, and even better once you fold down the back seats. Driver and passenger have seat warmers, which is a huge plus. Also, there is a lot of room near dash for your phone, sunglasses, wallet, etc. Overall, I am loving this car!

My tiguan is an absolute pleasure to drive. Although I have back issues, I can drive for hours without any pain. The seats are comfortable and the passenger area is roomy. Once the back two rows of seats are folded down, there is plenty of space to haul things around. It has a lot of safety features that I have never had before, but do not want to do without again. The camera provide great detail and allows me to see everything.

Tiguan has the best classic look for a relatively low cost compact SUV.
It is a great commuter vehicle with a bit extra space and height than a sedan. It seems pretty reliable so far no big problems at just over 60k miles. It is definitely not a car for performance or luxury. I feel like it very true to the description of a compact SUV.

Stylish, practical, and affordable.
Good on gas mileage, spacious, comfortable to drive, love the leatherette seats, seems reliable. Touch screen and apple carplay is easy to use. Stylish body style and just the right size. Affordable and good family vehicle. Overall very happy with the car!

The color of this car is such a nice looking color on the design of this car.
This car has great performance, I have had no problems with the car. I've only had it for a year but it's been great. The interior of the car is beautiful and smart. The car appears with a mature and young look, great for teens, young adults, and adults. Perfect car for all car shoppers. Was not a fan on VW until I tested it out this car and I love VW now.

Luxury at an affordable cost.
It's a high level of luxury inside and I love the car but the backup camera does not beep near static objects which is frustrating. It also has a lot of pep which is nice but I used to drive a mini cooper and the take off power of the tiguan is definitely a lot less but still works well.

Run from the dealership!!
The dealership is rude, condescending, and not truthful. They were pushy and lied. Very dishonest and not customer friendly. I would not recommend this dealership. The car runs fine but I was tricked into leading it. Due to covid-19 I have less than 500 hundred miles on the vehicle and have not really been given the chance to drive it very much.

Nice car to drive with lots of legroom.
Nice car to drive but it seems like not a gas friendly. I just wish I bought the sel than the basic but overall the car it great and nice to drive. Recently I got a recall message but they fix it right away and the car has lots of space and legroom.

My lovely tiguan is a great bargain and can carry a lot of people.
I love the price of the vehicle. I love the gas mileage it gets. It is very reliable. The panoramic sunroof is great. And the third row seat option is great for when I have need to bring other people in my car. The maintenance for the vehicle is very well cost. It doesn't cost much to maintain.

Drives smooth and is comfortable.
It drives very smooth. The seats are comfortable and it has many safety features. It has the option of a third row if we need to carry more people. It is nice to have that option without paying the higher price for a third row. I noticed the sound system is really good to.

Comfy finally a good choice.
The one that I have does not open automatically the truck to I guess that is a upside down.. However I didn’t think it would matter how it ever is very helpful if it would open automatically specially when ur carrying a lot of grocery.. It get overwhelming at times.. Besides that I love my car so much space my mom is injured so sometimes she sits in the back she gets very comfy.. She deserves to ride in a comfy roomy car.
