2013 Ford Edge Review: Unreliable Midsize SUV With High Ownership Costs

Alex Showalter
Sep 22, 2022

The 2013 Ford Edge only lasts around 150,000 miles with costly electrical and engine problems. It’s cheap at $12,285 to $17,077, yet not worth the money when the same parts fail repeatedly.

Steering is more responsive than average, there’s plenty of passenger room and the cabin is quieter than competitors.
dislikeFilled The Bad
MyFord Touch stereo system is difficult to use, transmission is slow to shift between gears and the suspension is firm.

Is the 2013 Ford Edge a Good Used SUV?

  • Overall Rating 5/10 – 2013 is a bad year for the Edge and it deserves a low overall rating due to the widespread mechanical problems. Owner reviews complain about high repair costs, a rough suspension, and electrical issues.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 7/10 – Interior materials are average for a midsize SUV, the seats are comfortable, and cargo space is good behind the back seats.
  • Reliability 4/10 – The 2013 Edge has a lot of electrical problems. We recommend avoiding models from 2011-2013, and go with a 20142020, which are more reliable.
  • Performance 7/10 – All of the engines offer good power for a midsize SUV, and the largest engine is quicker than a lot of the competition.
  • Safety 5/10 – The Edge gets an overall rating of 4 stars in government crash tests with 3 stars in the frontal impact, and 5 stars in the side impact. There’s optional blind spot and collision warning systems available.
  • Gas Mileage 7/10 – Fuel economy is good at 24 MPG, giving owners 430 miles of range out of the 18 gallon tank. Gas costs are $15 cheaper than average at $221 per month.
  • Value 6/10 – The Edge is cheaper than other midsize SUVs from 2013, but the high repair costs make it a bad long-term value proposition.

It drives really good. The handling of the car is good, lots of space.
It's a SUV and sits up high. It's all wheel drive. Only dislike it's a gas hog. I love the interior of the car its leather.

Overall great family vehicle.
My Ford Edge sell has heated front seats, GPS, backup camera, leather seats, automated fold down, Bluetooth connectivity, power front seats, power tailgate has everything I want in an SUV including space. I wish it had better rims. That is my only downfall with the car. I also wish I could move the back seats forward and back to allow more room but that is not a huge factor to me.

One of the best vehicles I have ever owned.
I love my Ford Edge. It has been a very reliable vehicle. I have actually owned two. I have had no problems and the gas mileage is very good to be a SUV. The ride is very comfortable and it can be very spunky when needed. I cannot say a thing bad about the vehicle. I would consider getting another one.

The ford edge is fun both off road and on.
The 2013 ford edge is one of the best cars I have owned to date. It does have a few factory problems such as the door sensor indicating that it is open even while the door is properly shut, but the problem can easily be fixed. It is very spacious and allows for family road trips to be comfortable and fun. Off the road it is just as fun.

It's not that expensive and easy on gas.
I like how easily I can get in and out of it .I'm comfortable in it when driving and it's good on gas.

It is a silver ford edge sel with 2wd and sunroof.
It is comfortable and fits 5 adults with ease. The trunk space is big enough to fit a wheelchair and walker. The safety is unparalleled and the durability has been unmatched. The sync system is very nice but could do with some updates and there is a heat glitch that should be fixed.

It is fast hits 0 to 60 miles speed in 6. 7 sec. Pretty fast and smooth.
Bought the car bout 11 months ago so far fantastic, not any problems with edge it's got the glass sunroof that is pretty awesome.

We love the Edge! It's perfect for our family.
The Edge had the style we were looking for. Nothing trendy that would be outdated soon. It was very comfortable and a smooth ride. It was also quiet. It had everything we wanted in an SUV for an affordable price. We already had another Edge and liked it so much that we bought a second one. It has been a very reliable vehicle, no repairs so far.

Very basic silver SUV with no bells and whistles.
The heater does not work and the oil pressure is always an issue. And these are normal issues with this make and model. I cannot figure out the heater and the oil pressure was a recall. The problem is the recall happened in 2014 and I no longer qualify.

Great for driving smooth but always breaks down.
My car drives very smooth has a nice interior nice leather seats, but it has come with many problem, it has: broken down over 3 times, and leaks all the time. When I took it to get fixed I found out my ford edge had many recalled parts. I am not happy and would never purchase a ford again.
accountCircle Lynne C
It is a good size with plenty of cargo space.
The Ford edge is comfortable for driving, easy to handle with good gas mileage. So far has been very reliable with no major problems. We use it for long trips, at least twice per year and have nothing to complain about as far as comfort and gas mileage. And being easy to handle.

Broken car- waste of money!
I am a first time car buyer and the dealership took advantage of the fact that I was. This car has done nothing but break down every time I turn around. I've put $10k into this vehicle in the last year and a 3 months. I wish they would've given me more information on the car and not beat around the bush about where the car came from.

What Do Critics Say About the Ford Edge?

  • Consumer Reports says the Edge falls short compared to other midsize SUVs with low owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds gives the Edge a 4.2/5, praising the quiet cabin, but doesn’t like the difficult MyFord Touch stereo system.
  • Kelley Blue Book users rate the Edge 3.9/5 and enjoy the room for passengers, however, owners don’t like the higher ownership costs.

What Common Problems Does the 2013 Ford Edge Have?

The common problems found on the 2013 Ford Edge include broken electrical sensors, stalling engines, and transmission issues. Overall, these problems are more severe than issues found on other midsize SUVs from 2013, and repair costs are more expensive as well.

Broken electrical sensors for the doors are a widespread complaint from owners at around 50,000 miles. The door ajar sensors fail repeatedly, leaving the lights and chimes on which drain the battery. To fix the problem you will have to replace the latch assembly for $500 per door. These problems seem to come back multiple times, leading to endless repairs.

Stalling engines are another common problem found on the 2013 Ford Edge. A failing throttle body causes the engine to stall suddenly while driving. Replacing the throttle body costs around $600, depending on local labor rates.

Transmission issues, leading to a “shift to park” warning light, are also mentioned by a lot of owners. Replacing the gear shift selector usually fixes the issue, although in some cases there are problems inside the transmission. The gear shift selector costs around $550 to replace, and transmission repairs are over $1,500.

There are 2 serious recalls on the 2013 Ford Edge. The first recall covers a fuel leak which can cause a fire, Ford will replace the fuel line. The second recall is for the half shaft which can become disengaged leading to a rollaway situation. Ford will replace the half shaft for free on affected models.

How Long Will the 2013 Ford Edge Last?

A well-maintained 2013 Ford Edge will last around 150,000 miles, which is only half as long as top-rated competitors like the Toyota Highlander. Regular annual maintenance costs are more expensive than average, according to data from Repair Pal, at $673 per year.

Since most 2013 Edge models have over 100,000 miles buyers should be prepared to replace items including the yaw sensor for $620, head gasket costing $2,000, and the A/C blower motor which costs around $250.

The ford edge is reliable and it has no problems. I have not experienced any problems with the ford edge because it is a great car.

accountCircle Kellee W

I bought my edge from a private owner. So it had 55000. Miles on it. Now at over 110k it still looks and drives like a brand new one. All I've done to it in the 4 years I've owned it is set of tires, and regular oil changes. That's it, everything works as it should.

accountCircle Steve T

Yes, I have found the ford edge to be extremely reliable. I have not encountered any major problems such as having a breakdown.

accountCircle Cheryl w

None at all except the natural and mechanical which is covered under the extended warranty which cost an extra $2,000 per car.

accountCircle Jessica P

It is extremely reliable. I have had my car for about 6-7 years and it has only had a few recall problems. I take it to the dealership for my oil changes and they check on my tires for me.

accountCircle Heather A

So far I have not had any problems with my ford edge. The only thing I noticed is 80% of the ford edges your see on the road that are 2+ years old the front emblem has faded and needs to be replaced.

accountCircle Donna L

Have been driving the edge for four years and have not had any issues other than regular maintenance such as oil changes and tires.

accountCircle Kaitlyn S

Very reliable, never have had a single problem, good on gas, very little maintenance needed. Good tires.

How Is the Technology?

The entertainment technology in the 2013 Ford Edge is similar to other midsize SUVs with a decent stereo system, an optional MyFord Touch navigation system, as well as USB & Bluetooth connectivity.

Safety technology is better than average with an optional blind spot monitoring, rearview camera, adaptive cruise control, and collision warning system.

Is the 2013 Ford Edge a Good Value?

No, the 2013 Ford Edge is not a good value since they break down a lot. Blue book prices range from $12,285 to $17,077, making it cheaper than other midsize SUVs including the Honda Pilot and Toyota 4Runner. When new, the price range was $27,700 to $39,150. Depreciation is worse than average, losing about 12% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the Ford Edge?

There are four models of the Ford Edge offered for 2013, from the base SE, all the way up to the performance-oriented Sport.

SE is the entry-level model with:

  • 17-Inch Alloy Wheels
  • Cloth Seating
  • Cruise Control
  • 6-Speaker AM/FM/CD Stereo With 3.5mm AUX

SEL is a step up, adding:

  • 18-Inch Alloy Wheels
  • Dual Zone Climate Control
  • Exterior Keypad Entry
  • Power Driver’s Seat
  • USB Connectivity

Limited is the most luxurious and has:

  • 18-Inch Chrome Wheels
  • Leather Seating
  • Heated Mirrors
  • 12-Speaker Sony Stereo System
  • Xenon Headlights
  • Optional Adaptive Cruise Control & Collision Warning

Sport focuses on performance with:

  • More Powerful V6 Engine
  • 22-Inch Wheels
  • Sport Tuned Suspension
  • Unique Exterior Styling

What Engines Come In the Ford Edge?

  • The base engine is a good 3.5L V6 which makes 285 horsepower and gets up to 22 MPG.
  • An available upgrade is the more efficient 2.0L 4-cylinder turbocharged motor, which generates 240 horsepower and gets up to 24 MPG.
  • The strongest engine is the 3.7L V6, which offers 305 horsepower and gets up to 22 MPG. Performance is good, taking 7.5 seconds to go from 0-60 MPH.

What Colors Does the Ford Edge Come In?

How Comfortable Is the Ford Edge?

The 2013 Ford Edge is a comfortable midsize SUV with seating for up to 5 people. The seats are well-made, supportive even for larger passengers, and they hold up well over time.

Passenger room is good, there’s plenty of legroom in the back seats for adults. Unfortunately, there’s no third row available, which are found on some other midsize SUVs.

How Much Storage Space Does the Ford Edge Have?

Cargo space is average with enough space for 5-6 suitcases behind the second row of seats, and up to 10 suitcases with the seats folded flat.

VehicleHistory Image

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The first generation of the Ford Edge was introduced in 2007 and replaced by the second generation in 2015.

2011: Minor exterior styling changes, quieter cabin, and interior improvements.

2012: New turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, Sync system available on lower models.

2013: All-wheel-drive available on base SE model.

2014: No major changes.

2015: Fully redesigned for second generation a with new exterior, interior, and engines.

2016: New Sync 3 stereo system, keyless entry and ignition added.

How Does the Ford Edge Compare to the Competition?

The Ford Edge is one of the worst midsize SUVs from 2013, with more complaints than most competitors. Buyers should avoid the 2013 model and go with a 20142020 which are more reliable.

The Chevy Equinox is another SUV which costs about $2,000 less. Handling is better in the Chevy Equinox, however, the Ford Edge has more passenger room. We recommend avoiding both for 2013, since the Ford Edge has a lot of complaints, and the Chevy Equinox suffers from engine failures.

The Ford Explorer is a competitor from Ford which costs about $1,000 more. Passenger space and towing capacity are both better in the Ford Explorer, but the Ford Edge offers more up-to-date technology. We recommend avoiding both for 2013 since they share a lot of the same mechanical problems.

Is it the absolute best. It is durable and it is comfortable. The wear on my car is fantastic and it is not expensive to repair. I love my car.

accountCircle Heather A

I spent 3 years looking for a new vehicle. I knew that I wanted an SUV crossover, something good on gas, with enough room for a growing family. The ford edge provides all this. I average 26 mpg, the back seat has enough room for our family but more importantly it has air vents! This was a big deal breaker for me because I have had to sit and back seats with no air movement and it makes for a long trip! The cargo area is plenty big and if I fold down the back seats I could probably fit an air mattress in there. The ford edge is a wonderful vehicle for anyone looking for a crossover SUV.

accountCircle Donna L

I love my ford edge. Good size. Sunroof. Decent mileage. Seat heaters. Have had no mechanical issues.

I love it, have owned several fords, this one is my favorite, good on gas, a lot of space, comfy seats.

Best vehicle I ever owned.
My Edge has 420.000Km without any issues. I changed the power brake booster in over 6 years of owning it. The Sync system is fantastic, the digital screens in the dashboard makes it look way ahead of its time. Up to this date is still one of the most loaded SUV on the market. Huge panoramic roof, 20" factory rims,Microsoft operating system. Intelligent AWD with display for torque output. Just amazing.

I purchased my car in 2013. Since this time I have had very little problems with it. My tires - made it right to 115,000 km; and all electrical on the car still work to this day. My only issue I've had was with the "heat" - at one point the heat stopped coming to my driver's side - last year. A quick $1800.00 fix and I was back in business. A must have for Canadian winters. Other than this...very happy with my Edge and plan to buy another one in approx. 2023!

Great but issues with features.
It drives wonderfully but a fuse is damaged so the outlets do not work properly and some do not work at all. I also have a lot of issues with the voice command system. I am not sure if this is a manufacturer issue or something that was caused by the previous owner. All in all though, I love the car’s look, handling, and comfortability.

I am very pleased with the gas mileage I get for an SUV.
The vehicle runs really great, ford motor company provided the option of an warranty when I purchased it used (the vehicle has less than 100k miles on it) and that warranty has been worth its weight in gold. The only issues have been general wear and tear.
accountCircle Megan B on June 24, 2021
Excellent reliable vehicle with no major issues.
I love this vehicle but there are a few problems we've had with it. For reference, it has over 130000 miles on it and we have owned it for two years. First being that the motor for the trunk door is going out and the door will stop part way through opening/closing. Another issue we've had is that if it is too cold outside, the car does not recognize the key fob and/or the key fob does not work. I find this vehicle incredibly comfortable from every seat in it. We love the panoramic sunroof. We love the sparkly black paint. However the rims have started to chip pretty bad. We also love the large display monitor however the plastic cover is no longer secured and will randomly pop off. We have had no major mechanical or electronic issues with the car but when we're in park with the car on for any extended period of time, the traction control warning will come on repeatedly. The center console also no longer latches. Other than these issues listed above, this car is great. Like I said, we have had no major issues with it and we are not easy on it. The interior all still looks amazing despite us and our dog in it almost every day.

The comfort and convenience of the ford edge.
I love the automated back hatch. It's so convenient. With three ways to open and close makes it a one click wonder. The backup came is another awesome feature. I never have to worry about hitting anything while in reverse. I am 6 foot 2 inches tall so the size of this vehicle really suits me while still getting 20 plus miles per gallon.

2013 ford edge car review for new buyers.
This car is very comfortable for me. The wheel is adjustable as well as the driver and passenger seats. I connect my phone through Bluetooth and I love that it automatically connects when I get into the car. The car drives pretty smoothly and you do not feel jerked over every bump. The touch screen is split into four sections so you can easily navigate it. Sometimes the buttons on the car are very sensitive and do get pressed by objects other than your fingers.
accountCircle nickia M on June 15, 2021
Remote start. Backup camera. All control on wheel.
I love the exact charging spots for when there exact people in the car and the back seat lay down back and sound system is good. Also in the truck there is a button you can switch that will lay the back seat out of your way when losing stuff in. But I am favorite is the remote start.

Good for a family of 4 or less.
Lot of recalls, check engine light, fuel inlet problems, gas valve, but no more than that. I haven't had it long enough to find out anything else. Always get a warranty when buying ford product. I have heard of other problems but I haven't experienced them myself yet. Very good SUV but would like more space.

The ford edge is a nice looking, reliable SUV.
I really love my ford edge. It is comfortable and very reliable. I have had it since 2013 and haven’t had any major problems. The seating is comfy and there is plenty of space in the back for luggage or traveling with my two big dogs. The one problem I have is some of the locks on the doors are starting to get stuck. Either they do not lock or it locks but will not unlock. I usually end up having to enter another way and pull the handle from the inside or unlock it manually from the inside. This does not happen all the time but when it does, it is annoying. Overall the look, comfort, and reliability is top notch!

The comfort of the seats is very good, the performance of the vehicle is great. The gas mileage that the vehicle handles is very good also. There have not been many problems with the vehicle, I have only had to take it to the shop 2 times in 1 year. The sport trim has a lot of pep to its step. The FORD Edge, with plenty of cargo space and great handling.
I find the Edge to be a comfortable car with many nice features such as heated seats, bluetooth connection to cell phone for calling and music, podcasts, etc. This version of the Edge does not have navigation built in and that is somewhat of a disadvantage, making it necessary to use an add on device for navigation. The gas mileage is reasonable, especially on trips and adequate around town considering that it is an all wheel drive vehicle, which is a good thing for Pennsylvania winters. Other convenient feature include power windows, power door locks, power seats, power mirrors, The back up camera is one feature that is hard to imagine doing without once you get used to having it. My model came with not only keyless entry but also keypad enter where the drivers side door includes a keypad, on which you can enter a 5 digit number to gain entry to the car. I find that a reassuring feature. I have had one major mechanical problem with this car but the dealership was very helpful and resolved the issue quickly and with very little inconvenience to me. Although the interior is comfortable, I find that it does lack as much convenient storage as my previous car. That is not a serious problem, as it has adequate console, and glove box storage space. All in all, I find my 2013 Ford Edge Sel to be a very useful and convenient means of transportation. I would not hesitate to recommend this car to anyone that is looking for a 4-5 passenger SUV with plenty of cargo space and great handling.

It's a very dependable. It has a lot of room and it runs awesome. Ford did an a great day on the edge. Test drive one and see for yourself. My animal's have plenty of room and I have a great Dane and she's huge. The gas mileage is very great on long distance. It takes about 30 to fill it up.

Comfortable and reliable SUV.
Very reliable vehicle, I have not any major mechanical problems. It's very comfortable and roomy. I wish it had more console room and that the cup holders were the same size. Overall this vehicle is reliable and comfortable. The navigation system is outdated, but Bluetooth connection is reliable.

Great medium sized SUV for errands and trips.
This has been a great car for me. I occasionally have riders in the backseat. Not sure how much room it would have with young children. Large truck space for groceries and purchases. Comfortable, smooth ride. Wish it had an electric lift gate. Have had only minor repairs needed. The ac actuator has had to be replaced. Front ford logo peeled off and looked dumb so we replaced that.

Ford edge great vehicle of choice and very reliable.
No problems, been great on gas. I love everything about it and it is very durable and reliable. I love the sunroof and the moon roof I just wished my second roof would open. I would definitely recommend this vehicle to all of my friends and family. I got it at a really great price.

The vehicle is roomy for our family.
We bought our 2013 Ford Edge in January of 2016. We were looking for a bigger vehicle than our Malibu. One downfall is that car seats are not designed for the middle seat.

Really enjoy the sun roof.
I love my car. It travels great. I have driving this car all over to Nevada, Arizona, California and has been great and comfortable. It would be nice to have seat warmers in the back. The only major issue has been battery drainage. Very good car, happy with it.

This is a good vehicle a little overpriced but overall very well built
It's is a good car and even the small motor is great. Interior is really nice also and the radio system is really nice. The back up camera is really helpful. The car is also really quiet and the ecoboost is really good for the gas mileage but having it stop at Red light is weird to get used to

Perfect and comfortable, very good.
Very comfortable and quite safe, fuel saving, the traction is quite good and the family quite likes the interior and exterior design, I do not find defects in this vehicle, the truth is I do not regret my purchase, if the entire ford brand is me looks perfect.

The edge is a newer version to a station wagon.
It works great, I came from a trailblazer that I loved. The edge is very reliable, but looks like a tall station wagon which I do not like. I do have one issue with my tire gauge and possibly tires. Whenever it gets cold, it trips the warning light to say that I have low air pressure. Nothing we have tried can fix the gauge.

2013 Edge Sport. Sporty family friendly vehicle
Good performance. Make sure to keep up on routine maintenance. Very comfortable and full of features. Could be a smoother ride, but depends on which edition have.

The most simple feature is the oil change reminder but my favorite
I have had no issues with this car, it has been very reliable. The only thing I do not like is the cloth seats stain very easily even if raindrops on the seats while the doors are open. It drives very smooth and is easy to handle. Has just enough features to not be overwhelming.

2013 ford edge sel review.
This car is fantastic for hauling and moving things. You can fit a ton in the trunk especially with the folding back seats. The only issue I have had is with the blend actuator door. Replacing it yourself is super rough and if you do not one half of the car is 100% on fire heat and the other side is super cold.

Good car, needs a tweak to the electrical system.
Good performance in terms of gas mileage and reliability. Have had continual issues where the heat is not actuated from the dial. Paid $ 100 for the problem to be diagnosed incorrectly when a friend was able to fix it by simply resetting the electrical system. Otherwise it has been a great reliable car.

Sporty, sleek, performance, mileage, great on long trips.
I like my Ford Edge because of its stability on the road. The suspension is amazing and quite. It is roomy Inside. The head clearance is great for tall people like me. It looks very sporty in the silver model I have. The engine is a great performer and good on gas.

2013 Ford Edge best car ever
I love my Edge! It has been a great and dependable car over the two years that I have had it! I have not had any problems with it at all. It has plenty of room and drives great! I love the touch screen radio and the leather seats are easy to keep clean.

It is awesome and a great car. I would definitely recommend this type of car to anyone
I like the size of my car. I like how it drives and handles. My only complaint is it has high miles and I worry it will break down.

Love the rear view camera and hand free liftgate
Very comfortable and reliable. Love the Bluetooth stereo and hands free calling. Love the hands free liftgate in the back and back up camera. Seats are comfortable. The AWD was great this last winter but it is great on gas. About 290 miles per tank but does not need premium gas.

Ford edge great family SUV.
Had a few recalls after I first purchased it but it was taken care of quickly by a local dealer. There haven't been any issues really to speak of. It is comfortable and has just enough room for the two boys and all their toys without being too big. I am looking to purchase a newer ford edge when I start looking again.

Ford edge sport is a wonderful vehicle to experience.
Well since problems is first on the list. I have to say I really do not have a problem with my vehicle. Performance is a plus I think my vehicle perform really well. Reliability I have to say, is not a problem as well had the car for 3 years and haven't had one issue yet. And for comfort well it is amazingly comfortable.
