2016 Ford Edge Review: Expensive Engine Problems Plague This Sporty Midsize SUV

Alex Showalter
Nov 8, 2022

The 2016 Ford Edge lasts around 200,000 miles with some serious engine and steering system issues. At $13,325 to $19,475, it’s cheaper than a lot of other midsize SUVs, but not worth the money when repairs cost thousands.

The Edge feels much sportier to drive than other midsize SUVs, interior materials are nice for the cost and the Sync 3 stereo system works great.
dislikeFilled The Bad
Rear visibility is poor with the small windows, there’s no third row of seating available and ownership costs are high.

Is the 2016 Ford Edge a Good Used SUV?

  • Overall Rating 6/10 – 2016 is a bad year for the Ford Edge since there are mechanical problems which gives it a low overall rating. Owner reviews complain about expensive repair bills, worn out parts, and even some electrical issues.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 8/10 – Interior materials are fairly nice in the Edge compared to other affordable SUVs, the seats are comfortable, cargo space is also good.
  • Reliability 6/10 – There are serious engine problems on the 2016 Ford Edge which are costly to fix. Models from 20152016 are bad choices since they all have the same problems. There are major reliability improvements for 20172022.

  • Safety 9/10 – The 2016 Edge is a safe SUV earning a perfect 5-star rating in government crash tests. There’s a standard rear view camera & Sync crash notifications. Optional upgrades include blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning & prevention, as well as forward collision warning with automatic braking.
  • Gas Mileage 7/10 – Fuel economy is okay at up to 24 MPG giving 460 miles of range from the 19.2 gallon tank. Gas costs are $2 cheaper than average, at $253 per month.
  • Value 6/10 – Prices on the 2016 Edge are cheaper than other midsize SUVs, although the repair costs get expensive, making it a bad value.

The major repairs are costly.
I love the size. And length of vehicle. I love the color. I love the built-in gaps. I love how smooth it rides.

Ford 2016 edge with rear camera.
Love it. Rides nice. Haven't had any problems with it. Easy for me to get in and out of. My 86 year old mother who has arthritis, hip replacement and bad shoulders is able to get in good. Love the rear camera, beeps when close to another object. The back is nice size for packing for trips.

The edge: it is just right.
Roomy and comfortable expresses the character of the Ford edge. Roomy from the entryway through its doors, to the cabin space for each occupant and the cargo space. As for entry, as well, it sits just the right height off the ground - not too low as most cars and not too high like most SUVs and trucks.
accountCircle Rachel T
An outstanding car for any weather and any age.
Very reliable car in any weather. Sleek features. Lots of room. Comfortable seats. Great sound system. The back seat could be a little more spacious but the front seat and back truck are very spacious. Would definitely recommend this car to anyone of any age. Very affordable to maintain and gets good gas mileage as well.

My edge has all the features you could ask for in a car.
I love all the features the car has and the amount of legroom. It rides very smooth. What I love the most is the reinforced steel bars in the doors, I feel that my family is a little more protected in the case of an accident.

Highly recommend love it!
I have had no problems, I love my edge room for cargo in the trunk space! I love the sunroof and the heated and cooled seats and the navigation system is phenomenal! Remote start is great and hands free liftgate is awesome when I can find it that is the one thing that is hard to locate and does not always work.

Do not buy a 2016 ford edge.
I have had to replace my engine and transmission after it hit the 60,000 mile. Every week I have another problem with my vehicle. The breaks have gone twice, the check engine light is always on. I have not had any luck with this vehicle. The battery is always draining as well.

Terrible vehicle engineering
I hate this car. I willing to accept ours is a lemon, but we bought this car brand new in 2016 and already the flex plate has cracked, the rear window has shattered spontaneously, and the water pump just died 5,000 miles after our 60,000 mile warranty. The water pump is driven by the timing chain which makes what should be a simple job an absolute nightmare to replace. The cost of this car keeps racking up. Zero stars.

Engine needs replaced at 70,000
Bought it at 65,000 miles. Check engine light came on. Took it in to the dealership and it needs anew engine.

Title of my review is dark blue mini cargo van. It is very low unlike any other.
My vehicle is oval, has a round top. The trimming is black. The color of my vehicle is dark blue. It is expensive on gas. It is two doors and it can fit only two people. It's not a very big van. It is good for hauling a lot of stuff. It is very good for when you go shopping.

My vehicle does not drive well in the snow.
I usually do not have problems with my vehicle, but it does not drive well in the snow. It is very spacious and comfortable.

Good family car and good for long distances.
Good mileage but bad shift solenoid. Car has plenty of room and does well in the snow. Material on seats is hard to get stains out of. Has rubber mats that came with car that have saved the floors from being destroyed. Overall a good car just has some minor issues that can be fixed.

It is a crossover between an suv and minivan
It is comfortable and reliable. I have not had any problems with it. It gets fairly good gas mileage.

Comfy seats. Cup holders in the driver and passenger doors. Big back seat.
It is a great car for road trips with the family. Very little problems. Big trunk. Back up sensor. Good in the rain and snow. Pretty decent on off roads. Great first car.

What Do Critics Say About the Ford Edge?

  • Consumer Reports says the Edge offers a nicer cabin than the competition with average owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the Edge at 4/5, praising the smooth suspension, although they don’t like the weak base engine.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Edge a 4.4/5 enjoying the powerful EcoBoost V6, but don’t like the poor off-road performance.

What Common Problems Does the 2016 Ford Edge Have?

Common problems found on the 2016 Ford Edge include engine oil leaks, steering system issues, as well as shattered rear windows. Overall, these problems are more severe than on many other midsize SUVs, leading to higher repair costs, too.

Engine oil leaks are a very widespread complaint from owners at around 45,000 miles. The oil pan and oil pan gaskets all fail as the Ford Edge ages, and have to be replaced. Changing out the parts is a time-consuming process, which costs nearly $2,000, depending on local labor rates.

Steering system issues, which lead to adaptative steering faults, show up on some Edge models at roughly 30,000 miles. Some owners have been able to have the problem fixed with a software update for around $200. Other owners have installed new steering components to fix damaged ones, which can cost over $1,200.

Shattered rear windows are a surprisingly common problem on the Ford Edge, which happens suddenly at any point in time. There are some manufacturing defects with the glass which cause them to shatter on a small chip. Other owners have reported the rear windows shattering when turning on the defroster. Replacing the rear glass costs around $600.

There are 5 recalls on the 2016 Ford Edge, which is similar to other midsize SUVs. The most serious recall covers front brake hoses which can rupture, leading to a loss of braking force. Ford will replace the brake lines on affected models. Other recalls cover a steering gear motor, air bags, as well as software.

How Long Will the 2016 Ford Edge Last?

A well-maintained 2016 Ford Edge may last around 200,000 miles, which is 100,000 miles less than the top-rated Toyota Highlander. Regular annual maintenance costs are more expensive than average, according to data from Repair Pal, at $525 per year.

accountCircle Deborah S

This vehicle has been extremely reliable. I have taken it on many long distance trips and am always comfortable and feel safe while traveling in it.

accountCircle Christine H

accountCircle Erin M

This is a very reliable vehicle. I have had no problems with this car since I purchased it a few years ago.

accountCircle Richard H

Yes, it is really reliable. I do not have any problems with the vehicle. It is very good on gas and easy to drive as well as smooth.

accountCircle Beth K

I have had any problems. I heard of someone she had a problem with the powertrain but not me Nice and roomy

accountCircle Julie M

Generally reliable. The only issues I have are that my lift gate doesn't close automatically sometimes and my air is delayed so I suffer in the heat for a few minutes while it gets the AC pumping.

accountCircle Mandy T

It has no problems. The safety measures make it very reliable. I have no problems when going on long trips. Keeps you updated to tire pressure, low amount of fuel

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is good in the 2016 Ford Edge with a standard 4.2-inch stereo screen. An optional upgrade available is an 8-inch touchscreen stereo with the Sync 3 software. Safety technology is great with a standard rear view camera. Optional upgrades include forward collision warning with automatic braking, as well as lane departure warning with steering intervention.

Is the 2016 Ford Edge a Good Value?

No, the 2016 Ford Edge is not a good value since there are some expensive mechanical problems which show up. Blue book prices range from $13,325 to $19,475, making it cheaper than a Honda Pilot or Subaru Outback. When new, the price range was $28,700 to $40,900. Depreciation is worse than average, losing about 15% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the Ford Edge?

There are four models of the Ford Edge offered in 2016, from the base SE all the way up to the quicker Sport.

  • The flagship engine is the more powerful 2.7L V6 turbocharged engine which produces 315 horsepower at up to 20 MPG. Performance is good, taking 6.2 seconds to go from 0-60 MPH.

What Colors Does the Ford Edge Come In?

Passenger room is great throughout the cabin, with enough space in the backseats to easily fit taller adults.

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The second generation of the Ford Edge came out in 2015, and is still being built as of 2022.

2014: No major changes.

2015: Fully redesigned for the second generation offering a new exterior, interior, and engines.

2016: New Sync 3 stereo system, keyless ignition & entry are standard.

2017: No major changes.

2018: No changes since 2016.

2019: New 8-speed transmission, minor exterior styling changes, advanced safety technology added.

2020: Standard dual-zone climate control, and new ST Line model.

How Does the Ford Edge Compare to the Competition?

The Ford Edge ranked as an average SUV when it was new, although on the used market they rank much lower since they have expensive problems which develop as they age.

The Ford Explorer is another SUV from Ford which costs around $2,000 more. Passenger room is better in the Ford Explorer, while the Ford Edge offers more responsive steering. We recommend avoiding both SUVs for 2016 since they suffer from a lot of mechanical issues.

The Toyota Highlander is a competitor, which is about $6,000 more expensive. Interior materials are more luxurious in the Toyota Highlander, while the Ford Edge feels much sportier to drive. We recommend the Toyota Highlander since they have lower ownership costs and fewer mechanical problems.

Expensive repairs
I bought the 2016 Edge Titanium new. At less than 50000 miles, my engine had to be replaced. Then, at 112000 miles, my transmission went out. I’m not happy with this vehicle at all! Will never buy an Edge again, maybe never a Ford!

Great car with a few minor inconveniences.
Drives nice and is comfortable. However, there are large blind spots and the center console is awkward and large. The car is a little difficult to drive because of the blind spots and it is hard to tell how close you are to objects in the front. Love the trunk space and the dashboard display. I have not had any issues thus far with this car.

The ford edge is a reliable car for any type of person.
As a college student who frequently drives long distances, the reliability and comfort of the ford edge has been incredible. I have had the car for 3 years now, and have had almost no problems. I do not have any added features, so I cannot discuss that, but the standard features are all up to speed on current technology even some years after the car was built.

I have not had any problems with this vehicle. I love how well it handles in the rain and snow. The interior of the car is very nice black leather. The features of Bluetooth, backup camera, heated seats, and navigation are great. For the vehicle being an SUV type of car, it gets very good gas mileage.

The exceptional ford edge.
We purchased our ford edge in 2018 when it was two years old. We love it! We have had very few problems with it that routine maintenance and care cannot fix. The main problem is that the brakes rub. We get it routinely checked during inspections and service calls. Other than we have had no problems. We love the heated seats, the performance of the vehicle itself and the sleek appearance for a family car.

The ford edge is a versatile small suv. The edge has the comfort of a high end car with the added bonus of a large cargo area which can be used like a truck bed. The edge is stylish and seats 4-5 comfortably. The sync navigation and hands free system is a great feature of the edge.

Smooth, safe driving with go and modern features that maximize efficiency.
I love my ford edge. I have been a Honda fan my whole life but my previous hr-v just wouldn't accelerate quickly enough and really bothered me. Once I drove the ford edge I knew it had everything I wanted and needed and acceleration was a dream. It also saves gas while stopped for short periods by turning off the engine briefly, but quickly comes back when releasing the break. It works perfectly for my biweekly 5-6 hour trips. It is extremely comfortable, safe, and easy to drive. I love the cameras that help with parking and everything else, as well as the lane assist and alerts and assists if another car gets to close. The back seats are also very comfortable with lots of storage and pull down cup holders in the armrest. Lots of leg room, too. It rides smoother than any car I have had before and I wouldn't change it for anything right now.

My ford edge is very modern, with features such as: heated seats, touch screen, in car voice calling, blind spot light warnings, backing up camera and audio warning. So far, I have not had many if any problems with my car. Lately, I have been noticing the brakes need to be updated. I believe it is a small problem. The only issue is the interior, I have a dog and his claws do not work well with the fabric/plastic on the doors.

Backup camera and keyless entry/startup.
Incredible on gas, very smooth to drive, convenient with the push button start and keyless entry. Roomy and has comfortable seats. The backup camera is very helpful when coming out of a tight spot or backing into one. It has plenty of storage space and the roof is not too low.

Ford edge sport - sleek, modern and convenient.
I adore my ford edge sport. It looks amazing, drives even better. The integrated sound and controls are phenomenal. I have had issues where the navigation screen would not turn on at random on ignition start. This was fixed by an update to the driving column. I also have had a few finicky experiences with the tailgate. When using the button to close it, at times, it does not close all the way or at all. This forces me to manually close the hatch. I have yet to bring this to the service center's attention, however. Any issues I have had have stemmed from new technology that all newer model vehicles have now, so I assume the tech is going to continue to improve. All in all, I adore this vehicle!

The best car for new drivers.
I love my car is probably the best car than I have ever driven in as a apprehensive driver who is nervous to be on the road I love all the features of this car has to offer especially the blind spot assist in back up cameras along with the GPS capabilities that this car has to offer I would definitely recommend this car for any new driver anymore do you is scared to drive a long distance. The only thing I do not like about this car is the heating cooling system in the way in which the radio and dash are set up I think this design could have been made better however it is very modern nice and looks very sleek. Overall this is a great car and I would recommend it to anyone who’s car shopping. In my opinion ford is the best car.

I never regret purchasing this vehicle. The seats are comfortable. It's safe. It's a really really nice car.
I love how smooth the vehicle drives. It gives me the feel of an SUV, but drives like a car, which I love. I love the panoramic sunroof, the large trunk, the interior. The color white is so pretty. It also drove amazingly in the snow.

2016 ford edge titanium-best car.
I really enjoy my car, ford edge 2016. It is very easy to maneuver, take turns, parallel park, and has very few blind spots. Maintenance is simple and not overly expensive. Additionally, ford vehicles can be services all around. The back-up camera is very useful and the truck feels easy to steer. It is fast but feels very secure. The trunk space is great and the additional feature of opening the trunk without hands is very useful. Having a dog, a car seat, a stroller, and there is still enough space for groceries.

Practical primary vehicle.
Very happy with the handling and comfort of my ford edge. Nice to drive in town, out of town and on the interstate. More cargo room would be appreciated but that is only an occasional need. Fuel use is good. Has more features than I need but hope to learn to use them to my advantage.

The Ford Edge a superior roomy and comfortable ride, front or back.
I've owned my Ford Edge a little over a year now and I must say that I am extremely satisfied and happy with my purchase. It is very roomy and leggy while comes in handy for a larger guy like myself. The gas mileage is great on the highway but it's a bit lacking in the city. But it is an SUV so it's to be expected. It handles very well in the rain as well as snow and ice. I recently rode in the back seat and can now say that it is an extremely comfy ride in the back as well. Great purchase I'd definitely do it again.

Small SUV great for cargo or family usage.
It is very spacious in front and back. Plenty of cargo space. The Bluetooth is great as well as gas mileage. I love that it tells me exactly what’s wrong such as oil change or low air pressure very convenient. The navigation is a little outdated but accurate for the most part.

Great car and great features.
The car has issues in the cold, sometimes it does not start. It has a lot of electrical features in it which can cause problems, sometimes a shortage however overall it is a great car. It gets good gas mileage and cheap to fill up. The car comes with navigation and great stereo system and is easy to drive and has blind spot monitors which really help.

Family friendly driving experiences.
Our Ford edge has had no significant issues and has performed as expected. Routine maintenance and attention to care of the vehicle have led to ongoing satisfaction. Gas mileage is satisfactory. Easy to drive on long trips and meets all needs for local errands.
