2019 Ford Edge Review: Reliable Midsize SUV With Reasonable Ownership Costs

Alex Showalter
Feb 4, 2023

The 2019 Ford Edge lasts around 200,000 miles with minor engine stalling and stereo screen issues. At $17,325 to $33,999, it’s a good value for a midsize SUV with a lot of standard technology.

likeFilled The Good
The seats are very comfortable, there’s a lot of passenger room and the cabin is quieter than other SUVs.
dislikeFilled The Bad
Interior design and controls are dated, rear visibility is poor with the large windows and the transmission is slow.

Is the 2019 Ford Edge a Good Used SUV?

Ford edge - worth it? The ford edge is a great family SUV.
I hate the 'stop and go' feature and wish there was a way to permanently disable it. Otherwise it is a fantastic vehicle. I love the lane assist and all the sensors that prevent collisions. The back hatch also has a sensor that lets you open it with a wave of your foot.

Eco boost, back up camera, heated seats.
I love my car, it has eco boost and heated seats and the cameras in the back for when you back up. When I want to open up my back I just put my foot in the right place and it opens. In the morning, I start my car up from my phone so it's nice and warm on my way to work. I love my car.

Great car for petite moms.
The edge is my favorite vehicle. I'drives so smooth and the drive assist features are so helpful especially where we live with all the two lane roads. It is my second edge and I cannot imagine driving another. The back seat has enough space for two toddler car seats and still has room for one adult to squeeze comfortably in the middle. I am 5'1' And the front seat is adjustable to my comfort level which is also a huge plus.

My ford edge car has been a comfort zone for me while driving.
My ford edge 2019 has been a good car and has been the best part of me. Good navigation system, smooth engine work and also has a nice tire. My car is a comfort zone for me while driving, a good music player is install in my car with makes driving so easy for me. My ford edge is reliability and durable.

2019 ford edge love and hate relationship but love mostly.
Radio has quit working multiple times, auto start has gone out, transmission started slipping within first year of having the vehicle, other than that the vehicle is great the safety features are very nice and I feel safe having my son in the backseat. The car is very comfortable for long rides and it holds a lot in the back.

Great gas mileage. Reliable family car!
Drives great. Love the screen and heated seats. It is a great family car and just the right size for taking trips. Gas mileage is also great! The only thing I miss with this mode is the electric trunk and the full sunroof in some other models. Other than that, couldn’t be happier with the performance and reliability.

Perfect SUV for road trips!
I haven't had any problems! I love this vehicle! My favorite features are the heated seats, back up camera, and automatic headlights and windshield wipers. I am always taking it on long road trips and it is the perfect little car for driving my family and packing everything we need into the spacious back.

Edge St sports model with hitch and paddles.
Heated and cooling seats are great. Heated steering wheel is awesome. Turbo really helps the performance and can really move. Paddle shifters give a nice sports car feel. One big downside is dealer SD me a car with summer tires. Told me they didn't know what that meant. Turns out not supposed to drive on those tires below 45 degrees. Kind of pointless in the northeast.

Worst car ever...what hasn't gone wrong?
I hate this car. I've been a Ford customer for almost 25 years. I bought the 2019 Edge ST and it spent almost three months in the shop with a loud clunk that occurred when the vehicle downshifts and hits 15 mph. Ford came back and said it was normal after all that time! Problems with the lift gate, door locks, screen and it makes a ton of noise inside the cabin. Worst purchase I've ever made. Ford could care less and denied application of lemon law. I'm switching brands as soon as I can!

AWD malfunction
I'm extremely disappointed with the new Edge ST. It's been in the repair shop for 51 straight days now, and 61 days altogether in less than 5 months of ownership. Ford doesn't know what the problem is or how they plan to fix it, much less an estimate on when I can expect for it to be road-worthy again. I'm basically making payments and driving an inferior loaner from the dealership. Ford keeps denying the Texas Lemon Law applies even though that is not correct. I keep asking for a replacement vehicle or all my money back and they keeping refusing. Time to get a lawyer involved.

Ford vehicles beware the engines and transmission are not what they were.
We have been for owners for many years and just our last purchase was the deciding factor to not buy another ford due to the transmission and engine. The engine surges and the car constantly bucks and surges never had this issue before but with the new transmission and engines ford is definitely dropping the ball.

Cool interior light package-choose your favorite color.
The 2019 edge is attractive and the titanium has every safety and electronic package available. I enjoy the heated and cooled seats. We have had many problems with the electronics. The tailgate did not work-data update required. The information screen showed the backup camera or went blank-data update required. The worst problem was a loud clunk when backing up and turning-required the replacement of the rear axle assembly. I myself do not like the sound of the engine. Reminds me of a wind up toy. It is easy to drive, but I prefer a vehicle that puts me up higher.

What Do Critics Say About the Ford Edge?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2019 Ford Edge offers agile handling and improvements from earlier years with good owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the 2019 Edge at 4.1/5, praising the plush interior for the money, but doesn’t like the slow transmission.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Edge a 4.4/5, enjoying the comfortable suspension, but owners don’t like the poor off-road performance.

What Common Problems Does the 2019 Ford Edge Have?

Common problems found on the 2019 Ford Edge include stalling while driving, a frozen stereo screen, along with key fob failures. Overall, these problems are relatively minor compared to some other midsize SUVs on the market, leading to lower than average repair bills as it ages.

Stalling while driving is the most widespread complaint on the 2019 Ford Edge at around 50,000 miles. The most common reason the engine stalls is due to a lack of fuel, which can be caused by anything from a dirty filter, clogged injectors, or even a failed pump. Repairing fuel system issues costs $150 to $850, depending on the source and local labor rates.

A frozen stereo system is another problem mentioned by 2019 Edge owners in the first 10,000 miles. There are software updates available for the stereo system which improves its reliability. Most dealerships will install these updates for free while servicing the vehicle, while others charge around $50.

Key fob failures also show up on the 2019 Ford Edge in the first 5,000 miles. The first thing to check is the battery in the fob to make sure it’s not dead. Changing out a battery costs under $5. If there are communication issues between the fob and the SUV then you will need to have it checked and reprogrammed by either a Ford dealership or locksmith, costing around $150.

There are two recalls on the 2019 Ford Edge, which is similar to many other midsize SUVs from the same year. The first recall is for seat belt webbing, and the second is for missing or loose bolts on the start/stop accumulator. Ford will replace parts on both for free on affected models.

How Long Will the 2019 Ford Edge Last?

A well-maintained 2019 Ford Edge can last around 200,000 miles, which is roughly 100,000 miles less than the top rated Toyota Highlander. Regular annual maintenance costs are similar to other midsize SUVs, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $450 per year.

As a used 2019 Ford Edge reaches 100,000 miles owners should be prepared to replace the A/C condenser for $775, the ignition switch costing $150, along with the lower control arms, which cost $400.

accountCircle Susan P

We had one problem early on. The rear hatch door was not working electronically. It was only a week old. It required a software update to repair it. You will not be notified if an update is required. Waiting for a problem is not a good way to learn of a software update.

accountCircle Jessica L

I have had my car for six months and so far I have not experienced any major problems. The only thing was the electrical update.

accountCircle Nae W

Many safety features including front and back cameras, lane assist with many alerts. No problems so far, only one week old.

accountCircle Jessica P

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is okay in the base Ford Edge with a standard 4.2-inch central display screen. Available upgrades include a larger 8-inch touchscreen display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Standard safety technology is excellent for a midsize SUV with:

  • Rearview camera
  • Automatic high-beam headlights
  • Rear cross traffic alert
  • Pedestrian detection
  • Post-collision braking
  • MyKey System
  • Lane keep assist
  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Forward collision warning
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Rain-sensing windshield wipers

Optional advanced safety features include:

  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Evasive steering assist
  • Lane centering assist
  • 180-degree front parking camera
  • Parallel park assist

Is the 2019 Ford Edge a Good Value?

Yes, the 2019 Ford Edge is a good value since it’s cheaper than many other midsize SUVs on the market. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $17,325 to $33,999, making it less than a Honda Pilot or Jeep Grand Cherokee. The more expensive ones for sale are certified pre owned models. When new, the price range was $29,995 to $42,355. Depreciation is worse than some other SUVs, losing around 12% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the Ford Edge?

There are four models of the 2019 Ford Edge offered, from the base SE, all the way up to the luxurious Edge Titanium model or the Ford Edge ST model which is more performance-oriented. The 2019 Edge is also offered with either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.

  • An available upgrade is the stronger 2.7L turbocharged EcoBoost V6 which produces 335 horsepower while getting 21 MPG. This engine also has an eight-speed automatic transmission. Performance is great, taking 5.7 seconds to go from 0-60 MPH.

What Colors Does the Ford Edge Come In?

How Comfortable Is the Ford Edge?

The 2019 Ford Edge is a comfortable midsize SUV. It offers a smooth and quiet ride, with well-cushioned seats and a spacious interior that can comfortably seat up to five passengers.

The front seats are particularly comfortable, with good lateral support and plenty of adjustability, including a power-adjustable driver’s seat and a manual adjustable passenger seat. The rear seat is also comfortable, with ample head- and legroom for passengers.

How Much Storage Space Does the Ford Edge Have?

The cargo space in the back of the 2019 Ford Edge is 39.2 cubic feet, and with the rear seats folded down, the total cargo space increases to 73.4 cubic feet. This should be enough space to accommodate most items, such as suitcases, camping gear, or even a small bike.

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The second generation of the Ford Edge was launched for the 2015 model year.

2015: Fully redesigned for the second generation with new engines, styling, and interiors.

2016: Standard keyless entry & ignition, Sync 3 stereo system offered.

2017: No changes from earlier years.

2018: No updates since 2016.

2019: Small exterior styling changes, new eight-speed transmission, more optional safety technology offered.

2020: Dual-zone climate control is standard, new ST-Line model added.

2021: Standard SYNC 4 stereo system, new 12-inch touchscreen, seven-speed transmission available on ST models.

How Does the Ford Edge Compare to the Competition?

The 2019 Ford Edge is a very good midsize SUV since it’s reasonably reliable and has a lot of standard safety technology for the money.

The Ford Escape is a smaller SUV from Ford which costs around $1,000 less. Both SUVs are very similar regarding technical features, while the Ford Edge offers more passenger room. We recommend the Ford Edge since the extra space is worth the additional $1,000 for an entry-level model.

The Hyundai Santa Fe is another midsize SUV available in the same price range. Interior materials are nicer on the Hyundai Santa Fe, while the Ford Edge offers some more standard safety technology. We recommend the Hyundai Santa Fe, although both are very good choices for the 2019 model year.

The 2019 Ford Edge is a very good vehicle. It’s family friendly and planet friendly. You need to be careful though because you’ll be going 25 mph one minute and 80 the next. Very Good SUV
Extremely comfortable and reliable. 54 months of ownership and no significant repairs needed. The Titanium with the panoramic sunroof is great. Straight highway mpg is over 28. Around town is 20-21. Great eco-boost engine but the transmission in low gears is a bit too slippery for me. The Edge in tricolor white has aged very nicely. Mine still looks new after a good detail or wash. Plenty of room for passengers and cargo. The Sync entertainment and navigation works well. My out of pocket expenses have included oil changes, wipers and a new battery in it’s fourth year.

All around great vehicle
I am on my 3rd Ford Edge. They are a comfortable great ride. The 2019 Edge I currently own is a Titanium and I love all the comfort features. All three of my Edges have been reliable, and have had to do only rutine maintenance. The all wheel drive is a must in Northern Michigan and it gives you a secure feeling in the snow. The gas mileage is reasonable for an all wheel drive SUV of it's size, and the ride is smooth and quiet.

An overall great buy - 2019 ford edge sel.
Ford edge sel is a very comfortable ride and very maneuverable for an SUV. It is quite easy to park. The all-wheel drive is excellent in winter. The sel trim has many great options including panoramic moonroof, navigation, backup camera, and co-pilot 360. The sel offers ActiveX seating surfaces rather than leather; while they are comfortable and easy to clean like leather they do give off a chemical odor over time that is quite unpleasant.

Vehicle car buying and maintenance experience.
I believe ford is a fair car company that offers quality vehicles. Car parts are affordable especially when it involves just normal wear and tear as you use the vehicle. The cost mounts up for things like brakes, rotors and etc. The only unpleasant experience that I would definitely know for next time is the whole car buying experience. If I wait for a long time to process some paperwork, I'll just take my business elsewhere.

Amazing performance and great family vehicle!
Amazing performance! 0-60 in 3 seconds! Its stylish, lavish! Smooth drive! All wheel drive! Sunroof! Safe for families! Comfy seats leather! Perfect for people with dog great back seating area! Lots of room to put things places! Easy clean up when children spill things!

The performance is great. No delay in acceleration.
The auto windshield wipers are not sensitive enough. The auto lights do not turn off when driving in sunlight but do turn on when driving through a tunnel or in a parking garage. Auto sensitivity needs to be checked. Should have rear ac controls also.

Daily driver
Have two major issues that Ford has not been able to resolve. #1 - While driving with the AC on all of a sudden the rear seats will start blowing hot air while the front continues to blow cold. Had it verified with a dealer and they have no clue how to fix it. #2 - Has a slow speed surge/buck and again their explanation is there is no code. Have seen numerous complaints from other owners on Ford forums who have the same complaint and Ford does dot acknowledge there is a problem, Have been a Ford owner all my life but I'm not sure I will buy another one.

It is a wonderful family friendly vehicle!
It drives smooth. It has heated seats. It has Sirius XM. It has big back seats. It has plenty of leg room up front. It has an turn knob for the drive, reverse, and neutral feature. It has nice leather seats on the inside. It is a very family friendly vehicle and is great for any events.

Sleek inside, responsive acceleration,comfortable.
So far I have not encountered any issues with my vehicle. I very much enjoy the cabin space provided. All the instruments are arranged conveniently inside the cabin which allows for total awareness on the road. The engine is twinned turbo which allows for moderately responsive acceleration. All leather heated seats are quite comfortable.

My ford edge; I love the concept the room and the handling of it.
I specifically dislike the required ford pass that was needed to operate the remote start feature, much rather have a key fob. This is my third edge and I really like the concept of the car. Dislike the all black interior but options were little in selection to get the vehicle at my desired price.

It is perfect for a family of 5.
The seats warm up, it is just the car is like too girly. But it is perfect for a family of 5, a small trunk, it is really fast, the radio is great, the GPS gives you the fastest ways to go, the gas does not really cost much to fill up the tank. It is just perfect.

Pig with lipstick
I had a 2009 edge and loved it, then a 2011 flex, loved that too. Last yr I bought the 2019 Titanium. Beautiful car but mechnically it was the worse car I've owned since 1968. First I could not get a 6cyl had to get a 4 cyl turbo.. It ran awful on regular, had to run premium, trans always shifting, would scare me in heavy traffic. Gave a fried a ride, he was getting out,(in backseat) put his hand on the armrest to push, arm rest broke off, cheap plastic. The latest, car overheated. No fluid on the driveway or local road, where did it go? Into the engine, so they told me, then changed that but suggested i do a oil change at 50% used. Traded the car that day for an explore with a 6 cyl engine naturally aspirated.

Great midsize SUV. Plus does very well on gas.
I love my ford edge titanium. I feel like I am driving a luxury vehicle with all the perks but not a large price tag. The only downfall this car does not offer some safety features that a lot of new vehicles offer such as brake assist, or blind spot assist. Those are the only two features I wish this car had and what I will make sure my next vehicle has.

Momma’s gone titanium with the new ford edge! Affordable, comfy & spacious.
I have loved my ford edge since the second I sat in the driver's seat! It was time for a bigger, more reliable vehicle. I have never owned a ford and I wasn't even looking at them to be honest, but it definitely caught my eye. Amazing trunk space, hot/cool seats, back up and park assist.. I could go on and on. The ride is so smooth, great suspension. Keyless entry and drive makes life with kids so much easier. I do not have to dig in my purse for my keys, the doors automatically unlock when I go to open the door handle. Great on gas, and completely affordable price, with all of the bells and whistles! I would definitely recommend a test drive!!

This car has everything you want to help you engage safely on the road.
A comfortable travel car that is great for long or short trips. Amazing features that feel luxurious, yet are helpful like parking assist. Performance is great, has great pickup. Have experienced no problems. Love the automatic lights that pick up brights when needed and the smart raIn detecting windshield wipers. It is a computer in a car, but not in a creepy way. You can use features as you wish.

Nice quiet ride. Love the big sunroof.
I have to have a car that is AWD or 4wd. This car makes it anywhere I take it on any kind of road. I love it but I do wish I had it in different color. I really love the touch screen and backup camera. I have two kids and they fit in the back seat comfortably.

Ford edge.A leader in the SUV market.
One of the most comfortable and smoothest riding vehicles I have ever been in. Handles great, a ton of safety features and some extras that prove what a great company ford is. I have the titanium package and in my opinion is well worth the extra $2000. Plenty of power, a spectacular sound system and a comfy, quiet interior makes this SUV one of the best.

Fast, fun and great to drive.
I really like this car. I traded in my explorer sport for the ford edge St. It is quick, easy and fun to drive. It came with plastic mats for the floor which is great since we are a pretty active family. There is a lot of trunk space and lots of features to enjoy on the car. I love the sync system that they have and it is really easy to use. It is a great car with a lot of speed.

A midsize SUV that is smooth sailing.
Ever since the ford edge came out, I have always loved the style. It is not too big or too small. It is great for getting the kids to sport games/practices or folding the seats down to move a large object. Gas mileage is on point with a mid size SUV. The sound system is nice and the ride is smooth. Highly recommend.

Great vehicle drives well.
The SUV rides really smooth. I love the different features of the vehicle. The one thing I do not like is that the backseat doors do not open unless you Hit Unlock instead of just opening the driver or passenger doors. The trunk space is quite wonderful.

I have no complaints, I love my edge!
I have no complaints about my edge. I have owned several new cars and I like my edge best so far. Sporty and comfortable, great on gas too! The edge is a great choice for someone like me who no longer has small children to drive around but still likes a larger automobile (but not too big).

It has a auto stop when brake for a traffic light..
I had the car less than a year and the head gasket need to be replaced. Over all I do like the car it has enough room for me and what I need. Very comfy the color I chose was black and has a grey interior. It is a hatchback so plenty for room for all my things and my dog loves to jump right in to take a ride.
